Everone wants to knock sequels, especially when they talk about the PS2. The obvious question that is yet to be asked is why.

Normally sequels are used to show lack of originality, but when you actually think about it, there isn't much originality going around either in sequels or otherwise. With the exceptions of a few games (Crazy Taxi), any game you pick up will be a variation on a theme, and though sequels are a little less varied than others, at least by sticking to a successful formula they increase the chances of a good game coming out, and when it's for an entirely new machine, you can't complain about it being just like the previous member of the series, as it's using a computer with entirely new capabilities, which nobody has played on yet, so that all that really remains the same is the basic look, storyline etc., which is neccessary to build a good game on top of.

So give sequels a break. The lack originality is present in all games, it's just not usually thrust in your face so much. And hey, at least you get a good game, better than the original, which is great, and especially if you never played the last one.

I think some sewuels are essential. Final Fantasy, Metal Gear Solid, Gran Turismo, Mario, Sonic, Zelda

The pressure for developers to make a new excellent game is immense. Everyone has been crying out for ff9 since they finished ff8. and the same with most others in the list. just because it is a sequel doesn't mean it is not a good game!

I don't have anything against sequels, infact I'm very sad when I hear a favourite game of mine will not be getting a sequel, however they should be kept longer so there are fewer but of better quality and more variety. A sequel is great, when done well. The Tomb Raider series is an obvious example of where sequels are misused, the name carries future problems despite there being NO innvoation.
The number of Ridge Racer games it a bit OTT but about two marios or two resident evil games on a console is just fine.
The main problem is playabiltity, if a new title doesn't seem diffrent enough and the player is already bored of the prequel he will put it down fast.
Is a difficult balance which few companies understand.
