Now, for those of you that don't know, Nintendo are a console and game company and the N64 is their latest console.

The N64 has been very successful, though has lost a lot of sales to the playstation. Unfortunately, the N64 was released a couple of years after Sony's playstation. Th9is lost Nintendo a lot of sales, as many console-wanters had already bought the Playstation.

I first played on an N64 a few years ago, at a friend’s sleepover. I played Goldeneye once, and that was it. It was two weeks before Christmas, and when I got home, I told my parents I didn't want a playstation anymore, and that I would like an N64 for Christmas.
Two weeks later, I had a Nintendo sixty-four linked up to my TV, and was furiously playing Goldeneye.

The console itself is a sleek black curvy box. It has 4 controller ports on the front, and the game cartridge slots into the top.
Nintendo's insistence on keeping the cartridge format was frowned upon, and many developers deserted Nintendo because of it.
However, it seems to have worked, the lack of storage being overcome with an expansion pack.

The controllers are funny shaped things, coming in a range of colours. They have a top part, with 3 handles coming down. The controller has an analogue joystick for precision control, and the classic D-pad. It also has 4 'c' buttons, often used for changing camera angles. The A and B buttons are the primary tools for playing games, though the 'Z' or trigger button, located under one of the handles is very useful in shoot em ups. The unit also features a start button, and two 'shoulder' buttons on top of the controller.
Behind the controller is a slot used for memory cards and rumble packs.

The majority of memory cards are 1MB, plenty for lots of game saves. However, only the recent games seem to need the memory, as older ones store it on the cartridge.

The rumble pack is the same as the PSX's dual shock capability, giving force feedback from games. If you are punched or shot in a game, the rumble pack shakes for different periods of time. You also feel the recoil from guns, as well as many more things. One unique use for the pack is in Zelda - Ocarina of time, where, if you have a certain item, will shake when secrets are nearby.

On the subject of peripherals, the expansion pack is VERY useful, especially in recent games. Donkey Kong 64, and Zelda - Majora's mask NEED the expansion pack to play.
This accessory basically increases the memory and graphics capability of your N64. Games like Perfect Dark will only be able to run a couple of modes without one, and hundreds of N64 games will benefit from the graphics upgrade.

There are not any other official peripherals, but for the cheater, there is the action replay cheat cartridge. This is pre-programmed with many cheats for your games, and more can be found on their website.

Now to move onto the graphics.
Many people describe the 64's graphics as 'cartoony', but it depends on which game you are running. Games like Mario and Zelda are SUPPOSED to be cartoony, but games like perfect dark offer perfect backgrounds, wonderful FMV's, and the gore effects and gun views on lots of games are amazing.
The N64 offers great graphics, but it obviously depends on which games you play as to how good the graphics are.

The sound effects on the N64 are amazing. They may not offer surround sound like the PS2, but will utilise your TV's speakers to their full ability. Background music on games is crystal clear, and the voices are loud enough to be heard clearly over the background sounds. It may not be able to play audio CD's like the PSX, but who buys a game console to play music on it?

Now, finally, I must move onto the games. They are amazing, with exceptions obviously. Nintendo's 2nd party developers, Rare, are the best company to ever make games. Their hits include the shoot'em'ups Goldeneye and Perfect Dark. They are well accustomed to making for the cartridge, and their experience shows in their games. A whole load of 3rd party developers make games for the N64 too. Companies like Acclaim, who made the Turok series, and team 17, responsible for Worms Armageddon make great games, utilising the N64's ability.

Many people, especially biased PSX fans will say there are not enough games. I must admit, the driving simulation region is poor, but apart from that, Nintendo is definitely quality over quantity, but there is still a choice of similar games for buyers.
The N64 offers great games like Mario, Zelda and Lylat wars, and people often say this makes the N64 a Child’s console. Ok, these games are for kids, but what about the games like Goldeneye, the Turok series, Perfect Dark or resident evil? Not to mention Conker's bad fur day, the new 'adult' Platformer, featuring a cute, but foul mouthed squirrel, lot's of violence, and many other rude things I wont say here!
Childish? No.

The prices of games used to be very steep, often losing Nintendo potential buyers. But all games were worth it! Nowadays, most new games can be found on the Internet for around £30!

The games I own include:

Lylat Wars: a slightly childish flight simulator, in which you take down very clever enemies

Banjo Kazooie: Definitely childish, too much so for me, I have not played it for two years!

Zelda Ocarina of Time: A great platformer, set in a fantastical world of fairies and magic. Unfortunately, has no replay value.

Rogue Squadron: A Star Wars flying Simulation based on the films. The best SW game on any format!

Worms Armageddon: The funniest and most fun game ever, in which you control an army of worms with weird and wacky weapons!

WWF No Mercy: A great wrestling game, the best on the N64, but cannot beat Smackdown!2.

Rainbow 6: a conversion of the highly popular PC stealth game. Very fun, but a little too easy.

Turok Rage Wars: A multiplayer based shoot em up out of the highly acclaimed Turok series. The single player mode is based on a huge death match!

Perfect Dark: Rare's most recent shooter, control special agent Joanna 'perfect' Dark on a series of missions. Features the best multiplayer of any game ever!

Goldeneye: Forever a classic! Another shooter from Rare, based on the film, and possibly the most successful game ever!

Now Nintendo aren't Perfect. And nor is the N64. One thing I feel is missing is a light gun for playing shooters! This would be a great addition to the N64, as the light gun is something I really like on the PSX.
It could also have A CD player instead of cartridges, and an audio CD feature.

The only other ting Nintendo could have done better is to have released the console before Sony's Playstation, then there would have been no stopping it, and the PSX would not have it's un-deserved popularity!

Overall the N64 is a great console for all ages, offering adult and child games, great graphics and great features. The peripherals are great, and the games are the best around!
A definite 10.10, beats the PSX hands down!
