How far can we go?
I have written my fair share of frivolous messages about Emotions within games, new dimensions of gaming, Virtual reality and hi-tech software, but here is a new approach - is it POSSIBLE?
Okay, heres how current day 'emotions' work. A programmer makes software which recognises different scenarios and events within games. This is then applied to your, or the enemies 'character' and he/she/it is programmed to respond in different ways.
But can you imagine a game where almost any scenario is possible? This is what some of us are speculating.
NOW can you imagine how long it would take to isolate and program for all these scenarios? No? thought not.
Now we come onto different ways of putting emotions into practice. The only possible soloution is a program which programmes itself. and I ask you, is'nt that a little to futuristic to talk about?
It may not even be possible to create emotions in this way. Virtual reality may never be implemented. Graphics may never get much better. Technology may not be advanced any more. This could be the end of advancements in gaming!

Gaming technology has to to end somewhere. could that time be soon? The answer? We'll have to wait and see.

The real test for games will be whether they can cause an emotional response from the player. In a recent interview the head of the team responsible for ZOE (PS2) said that if he could make the player cry, like some films do, then he would be the world best games maker. This is the future of gaming.

We have already hit a barrier whereby a console can make more polygons than there are pixels on a screen. Soon developers may be making games that look as good as real life. Drive down a road in GT3 and you may see people going about their everyday business. Play an RPG, and the computer characters may react when you knock into them! Who knows?

However, despite better graphics, all the player has ever done is to hit coloured buttons to make characters move on the screen. Will this saticfy tomorrows gamer? Probably not. In the future, companies like Nintendo must imerse the player in a game using some other method. Maybe peripherals like the maracas in Samba De Amigo will be more commmon. Or maybe Virtual Realisty will make a come back.

All we really know is that in the future the best games will be the ones that imerse the player, and evoke emotional responses. Obviously this will not be at the loss of fun, as this will always be the driving force behind games. Instead the fun in games may be found through different methods. The future will be a great time for gamers!

Don't be silly, computer games will go on until a suitable form of replacement entertainment can be found and i should think that's a long way off! Games with emotions that program themselves? have you heard of "Black and White"? In Black and White you are a god and you interact with your people through a creature avatar, however your creature is not just a drone, it has it's own personality which develops by how you treat it. This means that repeated slaps round the head should make your creature a raving psycho, whereas petting it and rewarding it for being good and not doing the toilet in your territory (yes really) can make it a friendly and good creature. This creature devolps, however, not only through your input but as to how it itself views things and decisions it personnaly makes. Peter Molyneux (the head of the company making the game) himself has seen the creatures acting for themselves as if they really had their own emotions and feelings as he saw it throw a waste product it had created at a defeated enemy, something it was never programmed to do! So games with real emotion are not really far off (the best example so far released around November) and the gaming industry will continue to progress for some time yet, my friend!
