Absolutely brilliant. You want Samurais? You got it! You want Ninjas? You got it! You want Samurais fighting Ninjas? Hell yeah, you got that too! The only thing missing was Godzilla, otherwise this was one of the best films I've seen for a long, long time. The fighting scenes were just intense, amazing, gory, stabby - just fricking brilliant. Even Cruise looks good with a sword. Forget what you think about him - Cocktail, Top Gun - this movie suited him down to the ground, and he did good. The main reason it was so excellent is that Samurais and Ninjas are really cool. Even cooler than robots, Mr Frosty, and robots that serve Mr Frosty's from their chest compartments!

Now get this: the battle scenes were BETTER THAN LORD OF THE RINGS. You got that? Better. You know the way LOTR made the Matrix look like a shallow special effects movie? Well, The Last Samurai did exactly that to LOTR. I don't think any of the scenes were CG - just people with swords, hitting and stabbing, and exploding with blood! That's what ruins LOTR - it's obviously CG, so you can't have any compassion when ORC_SPRITE_1167, or whatever gets hit by an CG arrow. Now horses getting hit by cannonfire - that'll do me.

I'll ruin something for you now - Billy Connolly gets killed after about 15 minutes. But this is a good thing, because it means that he can't be in the rest of the movie. Leaves more room for Samurais, see, which can only be a good thing.

I'm gonna try and see it. Being at a college full of media students, they all think they're too good for films like this.

And Fight Club flopping was partly down to Brad Pitt, who refused to take a cut in pay, which meant Norton and Carter also demanded their usual salary instead of the usual reduced indy pay, so the budget had to go up. And it didn't make enough to recoup that at the box office.

Stupid actors...

Fight Club was deemed a flop at the cinema. It went on to become the biggest selling DVD of all time when it was released. Because it's a good film. Sales at the cinema or on DVD mean precisely nothing.

The Last Samurai was ace. Cruise is brilliant, but doesn't get to hog the screen like he always does. And Luke is right, the battle scenes are excellent, especially the swords vs guns finale.

Yes, but that doesn't mean it's a success. With budgets getting higher and higher, and with it being a dry period (apart from LOTR) it was easy for it to get to number 1, but still not make much money.

It went to number one in America though.

I saw the a trailer for this at the cinema when I went to see LotR, and I wanted to see it immediately.
A few days later, though, I read something about some other film that Cruise had turned down, and it said he "opted for American Box Office flop, the Last Samurai".
Stupid critics.

Swords and fighting. I said it made the battle scenes look crap, which it did. Very impressed that they pulled it off so well.

Yojinbo is quite possibly the best film I have ever seen.

Managed to catch a viewing of this last night. Its a very decent film, with a loving and immersive plotline. Cruise does well and rather than carry his huge self ego further, the film manages to show him as a very good actor - especially in such a challenging role.

Yes somehow, I wouldn't compare it to LOTR (any of them). Firstly because I rate the LOTR series (and each individual film) as technically the best film ever made. I just cannot compare the two.

However, The Last Samurai was an unexpected hit for me.

Bring on Big Fish.

Seriously, I want that film in cinemas here, now!

Yeah, especially The Seven Samurai - absolute classic. Borrowed it off my Uncle to remind me of how good it was before seeing The Last Samurai, and even though I loved the Tom Cruise film, Seven Samurai is in a different class.
