The suggestion that videogames would become bigger than movies seemed adsurd in the 1980's but that has all changed in the 1990's as the prophecy has come true.1994 was not a particularly great year for games ,but the videogame industry still grossed more than the film industry despite hugely popular films like 4 weddings and a Funeral,Schindlers list,Lion King,Speed and Forest Gump.As proof Hollywood had to sit up and take notice, and began signing big name games to transfer to the big screen.Examples of this is a Tomb Raider film has gone into production,Final Fantasy and Tekken are also rumoured not forgetting Resident Evil. Some game films have recieved bsd press, the likes of Streetfighter starring Jean Claud Van Dam and also the two Mortal Kombat films have been slated. But that has all changed since the Pokemon phonomenon irrupted early this year, and their reply was a film called Pokemon the first movie which grossed over 50 millon dollers in th US in its first weekend shattering the record for an animated film which was held by Bugs Life. This is just proof that the games market is BOOMING and will continue to thrive and beat the movie in the race for the bigget industry in the world.

In response to Mags:

There will become a time where the film industry and the game industry will merge and there will be little distinction between these two giants in the entertainment business.

We have seen cross-overs for years, with computer games that are based on films, and films that are based on computer games. This has become much more common in the last few years (the only difference is that these days the games tend to be a lot more playable...let us never forget early 90's games like Predator, Blues Brothers and The Addams Family, ooh dear!).

With the increasingly popular DVD technology we also have the ability to merge games and films on to a singe disk, and with the Playstation2 just round the corner, the entertainment platforms of the future are taking shape today.

I will enjoy what we have today and look forward to what comes tomorrow, and just hope that the next breed of Nintendo and Sega consoles will reflect this growing trend.

Facts:
Goldeneye the game made more than the film
Gran Turismo made more than Titanic

Yet both these games cost less to make than the films. Just as Films replaced radios and radios replaced book, games may replace films. That's not to say films will die. That's just like saying "Radio is dead". Obviously it isn't, but now many people gather round the radio to hear the news bullitin any more? Not many. So maybe games are the next generation of entertainment?

Super Mario Brothers, Street fighter, Mortal combat, Pokemon(!), can't think of any more at the moment. Anyone else like to add to the list of rubbish films (Which happen to be games).
