Star Wars Vs Star Trek

Ok, now before everyone starts trying to put the Vulcan nerve pinch one me, relax and realise this is just for fun. (mainly).
Can we make generalisations about the fans of each?
Sure we can.

Star Wars Fans: Intelligent, well balanced individuals that remember their childhood being defined by those words scrolling up the screen and being entranced forever. (apart from the Phantom Menace, but not even Star Wars was Star Wars when it 1st came out).

Star Trek Fans: Unhinged, Net obsessed, late-teens to mid-twenties white geekboys unable to form relationships with the opposite sex so they debate who would win? Kirk or the Bald One.

Am I being unfair? I don’t think so, even William Shatner told Trekkies to “get a life”.
Now, if the figurehead of a cult says “Please, stop now.”, that’s a pretty good sign that things are getting out of hand.
There are marginal fans of each film, those that watch them when they’re on at Xmas and have the videos, and those that dress-up like the characters and attend conventions to get autographs from minor characters that nobody remembers.
And these are quite frightening individuals.
I don’t know, is it just sci-fi that spawns these Tower Snipers?
I like Star Wars, I own the videos and had the toys as a kid. But I haven’t read any of the books, they don’t appeal to me.
Fair enough, each to their own.

However…you can study Klingon at certain U$A universities. Does this frighten anyone else but me that groups of people want to learn a language from a television programme as opposed to making friends, having partners and interacting with real-living people?

Star Wars was a rip-roaring adventure using ancient plots and drama devices.
Star Trek is an overly preachy, moralistic tv show that, every single week, the red-shirt guy died, Kirk got it on with some blue woman and Spock raised his eyebrow at Bones (the campest GP to ever grace national tv) – Scotty bleated about “cannae take it anymoor Cap’n”, but invariably it did and they all ran from one side of the set to the other whilst “Proton Torpedeos” smashed the hull.

And compare the stars of each series of films and what they’ve done since:
Harrison Ford (Indiana Jones)
William Shatner (T.J Hooker)
Mark Hamill (The Joker)
George Takai (er……anyone?).

And the spin-offs…my god the spin-offs…Deep Space 12, Voyager, Terrahawks….(Yes I know).
The same show, different facial hair.
Deep voiced hero characters, minor ethnic ones that stand around and fix things, alien women that fall under the charms of Hero. (Except Picard, who would most likely go for Bones).
And please, no more Holodeck episodes, get a bigger budget and stop using the Warner’s Backlot.

So, in summary:

Star Wars: Classic adventure, like an old friend coming over to visit.
Star Trek: Jehova Witness’ at the door, lights off and pray they leave soon.

Blimey Fm.

Can I suggest you grow a sense of humour?
If you read my original post, I was playing Devil's Advocate.
However, if you go to conventions dressed like them:
You ARE sad
If you learn Klingon:
You ARE sad
If you buy those technical blueprint books:
You ARE sad

May I suggest you watch Galaxy Quest to see just how seriously people take hardcore sci-fi fans.

All together now:
It was a bit of fun.

Apparently you all got that except for Mr Fantasy.
Touched a nerve did I?

Never mind, I'm sure I would end up as a redshirt

Woah there. Too many generalisations in these posts. It's a bit 'racist' to start labelling Star Wars and Star Trek fans as geeks, and trying to classify them into specific groups.

People like what they like for many different reasons, same as with game consoles, there are similar traits in the PS2/Gamecube arguments as you get with Trek/Wars rivalry, and the general ending to both arguments is that we each like our own because we do, we don't really have to explain why, or we find it difficult to do so, we just do.

Trek/Wars fans come from all walks of life, all age groups, all backgrounds, there's no real reason why they should fit into a specific stereotype.

My personal view is that Star Wars is better, because yes it brings back the memories of the words scrolling up the silver screen followed by that HUGE destroyer just rolling on and on until you thought it would never end. I was brought up on Star Trek as a kid, and used to always sit there glued whilst Kirk sorted out the Enterprise's problems, so the spinoffs never really caught my interest as much, because mainly I never had Sky until a few years ago, and I couldn't really be bothered to catch up on it all.

But I don't got to conventions, I don't climb up clocktowers, and I don't do funny handshakes. I'm just normal old me, no geekiness in sight.

P.S. If you really want to upset a Trekkie go to a Star Trek convention dressed as Darth Vader.

I had a friend called Chris, he was obsessed with StarTrek. He used to bring his Toy battery operated Phaser into school

Anyway to cut a long story short, it churned out that he was Gay all along! That also explained why he liked the Backstreet Boys so much.

Anyway cant people like StarWars and StarTrek, theyre both good in there own ways!

Um, was Terrahawks really a Star Trek spin off?

I used to love that show as a kid, but can barely remember it at all bar the name Zelda, and the little spherical things playing noughts and crosses as the end credits rolled....

Goaty, ooo what a teeth drying topic you have started here hehe, Star War Vs Star Trek, eeeek a difficult choice and one that for some cannot be made, as you`ve pointed out that Star Wars is cool (and will be....always) and Star trek tends to get the geek rating stamped onto their movies and shows.
Well here is my views about both, i love them both but Star Wars will always be the one for me as if you read my `That` Experience it was the movie that got me hooked on sci-fi.
Don`t get me wrong though i adore Star Trek`s and i consider myself a Trekker or whatever the name is latley, just given the choice which i would not like to make, it would have to be Star Wars for being the beginner for me.

Star Trek gets alot of flak about geekyness, i think it`s wrong, to me it`s just obsessed fans whoch you get in any genre. I must admit my first taste of Star Trek that i really liked and got into was Star Trek: The Next Generation, for some reason i could never get into original Star Trek`s, mainly because i didn`t find any umpf in them, but with TNG i always found it interesting and the characters were good.
When Deep Space Nine came out i was instantly into it, but the show didn`t really explode until Worf came in from TNG, then it was battles galore and it finished up a great series.
The same for Voyager, a great series but until 7 of 9 came into it and had that `data` role aboard the ship then it got to it`s best. Also when Seven came in, the borg were more in the show, and they have to be the best enemy`s. And with Voyager finishing up now and into it`s final series i think it` will go out with a bang, because the stories in this last season are some of the best so far.

Now the films, were a bit erratic, the first one was very average and the worst of them all, the Wrath of Khan was a classic, the third was good, the fourth was.....ok, the fifth was......ok, but the sixth one The Undiscoverd country was great, with everyone favourite race the Kingons being forefront in it.
Now when Generations came out, then the movie`s started to do the tv shows justice, and First Contact was the best Star trek movie of them all, and finaly Insurrection, although good was a but de-flated after the classic First Contact, but with some great explosions that are only justifyed by DVD.

Now onto Star Wars, well the classic saga that got me hooked and will get generations to come hooked onto sci-fi, aexcellent mix of great story, great action, great music, just everything excellent, roll on Episode II i say:)

So for me both are excellent, but given the choice it would have to be Star Wars. It all depends on what you like, some people will have one and not the other or like me both. Star Wars is the complete fantasy of good against evil, were as Star Trek is more closer to home of what we would like to be our better future.

There`s one final thing i`d like to mention though, if you`ve noticed that both Star Wars and Star Trek serie(s) have not graced us yet on DVD, 3 Star trek movies have, but i`d like to see the Star Wars movies and Star Trek Serie(s) on DVD, to do them both justice and enhance our life with digital magic:)

Ok words over from this Geek with a colourful face (not white)& who has a girlfriend and who does get out hehe :))

And loves both Star Wars & Star Trek:)

Good topic, Goaty
