This time: China - now that *could* be the big explosion in cases that the media were scaremongering us with last year. It's one of the most dense countries in the world (not "dense" as in "smash fas wiv keeeborad" dense, but "heavily populated over a small area" dense), so the disease could spread more effectively over there than it did over here. Only a few cases reported so far, but you know how these things spread. The newspapers have started their scare-tactics early this time though - 2 whole cases!

Although the Chinese authorioties did make a collosal mess-up of things last year (some of my friends were over there when it kicked off), the fact is that 300 people dying in a population of a billion is far from disasterous.

Just a few weeks back, 20,000 people died in the Iranian earthquake.

The major worry is that the disease will mutate into something more deadly and contageous, but that's something that is true of a lot of other viruses in thw world. In actuality, thanks to the massive international effort to stop the spread of SARS (except in Toronto) it means that SARS will never become a global disease - there are far worse things to worry about.

More like the power to do basically what it wantts to it's own citizens. Epidemic control in a non-democratic state is surprisingly easy.
