After seeing so many films with Seth Rogen in and realising I had missed this one, I was quick to purchase the DVD in a sale I was browsing through. From the people who brought us Superbad and Knocked up, so it has the pedigree to be a great comedy but I am sure you are all aware as I am that it does not mean you are guaranteed a good comedy!
Seth Rogen plays his usual under achieving, drug using, average Joe. This time he works as someone who delivers court letters to people who are avoiding them (so he has to dress up to get close to the people and give them the letter). The film only focuses on this for a very short time, and within the first 20 minutes you see Dale heading to pick up some drugs from his friend Saul, played by James Franco. Saul is the typical impression everyone has of a drug dealer, long hair, unclean, lives in a bit of a dump and he is constantly high as well. The plot continues that he has a new type of cannabis called “Pineapple Express” and he is the only person in the city who has it. Very strong substance that gets the couple very high, after a few smokes Dale leaves to give someone a letter for their court attendance. He is going to see a man named Ted Jones, who is a drug lord in the city and in a constant war against the Asians. When Dale arrives and is finishing his joint, he see a lady cop head in the house and then witnesses Ted and the cop murdering someone. After seeing this and freaking out, he throws the joint and drives away as quick as he can to Saul’s place. Realising someone was outside, Ted investigates where Dale was and finds his joint. Being a top drug lord he knows it is the “Pineapple Express” and he knows who has it!
From here the film carries on with the whole adventure of Ted chasing down Dale and Saul, trying to kill them as he thinks they are working for the Asians. Now the plot does not exactly jump out as the world’s best comedy, but it all stems from what happens between Dale and Saul as they try work the whole situation out and not get killed! For the better part of the adventure, they are stoned and I found most the comedy came from how the two react in situations due to their state of mind, or the silly little things they do because they are stoned.
The downfall to all of this, the comedy and the film only really applies to people who have an idea what that state of mind is like, I am sure if you are a user of cannabis you would find it funnier than those who don’t, while there are funny bits everyone will enjoy. I watched this with my girlfriend and she found the whole thing very stupid and could not appreciate some of the films comical points. I was able to appreciate some of the more drug related aspects but I still believe anyone who lives the kind of life that Dale and Saul do, would find the film even funnier than most. There are some great slapstick moments with a couple of fights that had me in stitches and Seth Rogen is as funny as always. It seemed a bit weird with James Franco being in a comedy due to his more famous role in the spider man trilogy, but he pulls it off well and is a very believable drug dealer (might not be something to be proud of lol)
So in summary, the film has ups and downs with some good comic moments, I think it is one for a group of lads having a beer, much like Superbad, and not as open for everyone like Knocked up is. I would recommend the film to fans of Seth Rogen but I would still head warning to those who are anti drugs or may be unaware of how things are seen in the shoes of Dale and Saul. But worth a rent for those who enjoy a simple comedy with heavy drug references.
