So little has been said about The Getaway on this forum, and although it's still a while off (September?) I think I'll go in for a little pre-release excitement.
Firstly this game looks fantastic. Many magazines had trouble with the graphics because they felt that they couldn't be anything but prerendered FMV. But now it's clear that all the screen shots that were seen of this game are 'in game' shots!!
But graphics are one thing gameplay is another. (The Bouncer!) At the moment there is little information on how the game plays, but you are given the oppotunity to play as a mobster and a policeman.
Early indications suggest that this game will be more than 'Driver with fancy graphics' and more than 'Grand theft auto in 3D'. The story line will be heavily developed, I believe they've employed a proper script-writer, while retaining that freedon of movement that we've all grown to love.
One inportant point that I haven't mentioned is that the game takes place in the centre of London, whicgh has been accuratly mapped and photographed - so much so that you'll be able to recognise where you are etc.
Also the SoHo studio have mentioned releasing add-ons or something with extra missions and more of London to explore.
Overall it appears that Sony have a winner on their hands and The Getaway also demonstrates that it's not just Konami and Polyphony who are really getting to grips with the PS2, but also Sony's 1st party developers aswell.
Failing that, the ability to steal buses and make them stop at the stops they're supposed to and not go shooting past me when it's raining.
I may have issues here
But interestingly enough the Getaway'll be an 18 I think!
Does anyone else like Team Soho's logo? The PS symbols making up that little face... cute, well conceived and very appropriate, I reckon.
I actually had to look twice at the most recent screenshots because I thought they were actual photos of London.
The game should be a mix of Driver and GTA, which can't be a bad thing. As long as the speed is there and the story is good, I don't see how it can fail. Another true next-gen game!
