If I want to download windows updates (windowsupdate.com), will they check whether I have a legitimate version of Windows or not? I don't want Bill Gates to come to knock on my door and kick me in the shins for having a non-legit copy. Is it important or not?

Be warned though, one of the hotfixes included is purposely made to scan your system and detect if your edition is legit or not.

I thought you should never do that if you don't have a proper version.. :s I was wrong.. :s

Don't download the updates at all
they have made me do a full system restore both times I installed them

there are FAR too many copied versions of windows to keep up with.

I think your better off jut using Windows Update and hoping it doesn't happen. Like Timmargh said:

You'll be more protected and secure if you downloaded the updates rather than relying upon your Firewall and Antivirus software!

I use Windows update every other day just to check (but then I have a legit copy). I also update Norton Internet Security at the same time. With Broadband I can now just update in the background whilst doing my work.
Its worth the risk, but then, one in a million are good odds!...
