they have made me do a full system restore both times I installed them
there are FAR too many copied versions of windows to keep up with.

I think your better off jut using Windows Update and hoping it doesn't happen. Like Timmargh said:

You'll be more protected and secure if you downloaded the updates rather than relying upon your Firewall and Antivirus software!
I use Windows update every other day just to check (but then I have a legit copy). I also update Norton Internet Security at the same time. With Broadband I can now just update in the background whilst doing my work.
Its worth the risk, but then, one in a million are good odds!...
