We’ve all been there. Had a really heavy night of drinking that resulting in us blacking out most of the evenings events and forgetting what we did. Sometimes we’ve said something we shouldn’t, others we’ve done something stupid we regret. I’ll tell you what though, whatever night you had, I’m sure it wasn’t as bad as these guys.

The Hangover totally shocked me. What I expected to be a typical mindless slapstick comedy turned into a genuinely funny and really engaging hour and a half. The cast were brilliant, the humour smart and amusing and the story never boring and always keeping you wanting to find out just what happened that night.

It’s the night before Doug’s wedding and his two best friends Phil and Stu decide to celebrate the only way it should be. In Las Vegas. The three and his fiancé’s very strange brother all set off and rent out the nicest room available. Things start off well with a few drinks and congratulations from the guys, but before you know it we flash quickly to the next morning with the room in a total mess and no one remember exactly what happened the night before. Worse than that the groom is missing! It’s the perfect set up to a comedy offering so many unique set ups and situations for the group some being random and some just plain out weird.

The movie is split into three parts. You have the opening where everyone wakes up and weird, unexplainable, random thing start happening which to me is the best part of the movie. Seeing the guys waking to a tiger in the bathroom, a baby in the closet and chauffer handing them a police car thing they’re cops is hilarious and you’re at the peak of excitement waiting to see how these things got there.

The second part sees them trying to find answers and more importantly their friend Doug. This too is great fun as new events occur including a naked Chinese man jumping from the boot of a car and more. This entire portion of the film almost teases the viewer with new information without giving too much away as that is saved for the final part.

The final part has everything falling into place for the guys as they try to solve the final pieces of the puzzle and make it back for the wedding. It all works so well in a movie that could have easily fallen flat when explaining the events of the night before.

The problem with reviewing this movie is revealing too much as half the fun of it is in discovering the events of the night. It’s almost like a mystery as you try to figure out the possible solutions with the clues given. The ending credits also deserve a mention as these include photos from the forgotten night which are just as funny to watch through as the movie itself.

As for the characters they are great to watch. Phil is the caring, handsome one of the group and is played well by Bradley Cooper. Stu played by Ed Helms is hilarious as the uptight one with the dominating girlfriend and his missing tooth is one of the best laughs at the end of the movie. But the one who really steals the show is Alan played by the wonderful Zach Galifianakis who is constantly doing something funny or saying something equally stupid and downright hilarious throughout the movie. Each work well together and have their moments with no one trying to steal the spotlight like so many bigger named comedy actors out there in their movies.

Overall The Hangover is perhaps the funniest movie of the year and maybe even so of the last few years. The cast are lovable and the pace always perfect. If there’s one film you have to see this Summer it has to be this. It cannot come recommended enough.
