4 months ago I recieved my pre ordered playstation 2.
Over the last 4 months I have had total 100% satisfaction with the little black box that ocupies my bedroom floor. I have maximised its use by hooking it up with the optical out to a sony dolby digital amp and a set of 5.1 surround sound speakers (A heavy toll on my student bank account).
The dvd surround sound playback is stunning and at times overwhelming! I also have the memory card and the multitap and 4 controllers, plus a copy of timesplitters. I guarantee you that this is the full reciepe for a four player frag fested swearing deathmatch that lasts more than a few hours.

Ever since getting my playstation 2 I have noticed the various levels of criticism. Most people who say the console is poor, have not even come in contact with a ps2 and if they did, only played 'Aqua Aqua: wetrix 2' on it. Others who say the games are not 'fullfilling the potential of the machine' are totally right.
If the original playstation had come out in 1995 with the game GT2 or driver 2, then the console sould only have lasted a few years. A steady progression of good to excellent games on the playstation meant its owners were continually surprised by the improving graphics and gameplay of titles. Its the same with the playstation 2. The games in say, 2 years time will be simply unbelieveable. You just have to wait. If you think 'star wars starfighter', 'ssx snowboarding' or 'timesplitters' are good then just you wait.
The first of the really good games are on the horizon. I've played the GT3 demo and it is stunning, better than any pc driving game. The full game will be even better. But the big game to change things and sell the console this christmas is of course Metal Gear Solid 2. The game is simply just stupid. The attention to detail is incredible, its silly. The graphics are great, ridiculous infact. But with a game like that, its all about the gameplay. Aim your gun at an unsuspecting guard and he will stick his hands up. Aim your gun at his balls and hill surrender his bullets. I kid you not. Let your health run too low and you'll be leaving blood trails. see a guard with a gun bigger than yours - so kill him with one shot - Shoot a fire extinguisher and it will explode, killing the guard. Little things make big things better.
Games in Japan have already utilised digital camera connections by providing the ability to put your own face on players. The 'pop-egg' ps2 printer is already out there. Games are gonna get better than Metal Gear Solid 2 because of the room for making games more fun with digital cameras etc.

And a message for all you PC lovers.
Someone told me recently told me to 'get a proper computer' (referring to the ps2). Okay, next time I want to play a four player death match battle at 60 fps with 4 of my best mates in the same room I will:
a. Buy a top of the range ultra fast computer with modem.
b. Install a broadband/cable internet connection and get an ISP.
c. Buy a copy of the latest deathmatch game (Quake 3, Unreal tournament - both incoming on ps2)
d. Find 4 mates with equal spec pcs and each with a copy of the same game I want to play Just exactly how much would that cost?
Oh and thats only gonna work providing your pc doesnt crash. Plus there is no way your internet game is going to run at 60 fps. Believe me, computers are for work. Consoles are for gaming (well - they are now ps2 has arrived). My pc has not seen a game since the hard drive failed in January and I lost all my hours of game data for all my games - this says it all.

And for all the people going on about x box. There is no way I am going to give my hard earned cash to that rich kid Bill Gates. I'd rather support sony than microsoft. at least they have earned it with playstation and now playstation 2.

After all that waffle, the playstation 2 is a great console that has a whole lot more in store than you can imagine. We have still to see the hard drive, broadband connection (compatable with forthcoming ps2 titles like Final Fantasy XI (FFX is a traditional offline game, FFXII will also be offline)), an official keyboard and mouse, digital camera and printer connectivity plus, the kind of game downloads to be available. Great games, great connectivity and a bright future.
Its a next gen console and it rocks.

ps. If you have a ps2:
well done.
oh and buy a copy of Z.O.E this friday.

I am 'Tony Nibbles' and no relation to 'tony'.

It may be a bit late for that posted message but I had to let it all out of my system.

It is unfortunate 'Psychodelic fish' that you have used your ps2 to so little of its current potential the surround sound is truly wicked and I would recommend timesplitters and star wars: starfighter and Z.O.E out this week.

Yes - quite out of character. Something must have trigerred a mental bypass overload. Good job I have twin multi-tasking brains (although these are now under control since the one which controls the lips lost the battle due to memory loss cause by the one which controls the memory)
