Hello.

Since.. God knows when, my DVD drive and CD-R drive have been playing up.
And I've only just noticed!

In the device manager, they have both got exclamation marks next to them.
I only just noticed when I tried installing something earlier on but it wouldn't find my E or F drives! Weird.

In the properties on the device manager, for the DVD drive and the CD-R, it says:
"Windows successfully loaded the device driver for this hardware but cannot find the hardware device. (Code 41)"

The troubleshooter says, "Did you detach your device from the computer?".

It must've fell out.. ;) I haven't touched it.
And I'm not too good with the guts of the motherboard, so attaching back would be.. weird!

So, do you think it has disconnected?! Or something else?
Any help is appreciated.. Thankyou!

Thanks for the replies, by the way. Checked everything was plugged in and it seems as though they all are. I will restart in a mo just to see what it says..

(I was thinking more of checking the list of detected devices that is usually displayed automatically during startup)

Is the device detected in the BIOS? That is to say, in the screen that appears when you turn the computer on, can you see a reference to the CD drive anywhere (listed with the hard disks)?

Sounds like it could've come out somehow. Strange though, since all the connectors inside a PC are tight fitting.

Open up your case and (after earthing yourself {touch the frame of the case}!) just make sure all the connectors in the back of the drive are pushed fully in. If they already are, follow the IDE cable (the grey ribbon) down to the motherboard and make sure it's fully pushed into the socket there.

There should be no problems/complications if this is all you will be doing - as long as you don't go re-arranging cables.

What make/model drive is it?
