"Ghosts Can't Die!"

Summer Blockbusters. It’s that time of year again, and like me many people out there have likely had a movie already in their mind that they couldn’t wait to see even before the season kicked off. Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince and so on. However mine isn’t a likely candidate at all and one many people may not have even known was out this Summer. The Final Destination. Why exactly this? Well that’s have a look at the series as a whole.

A little warning, ahead are very slight spoilers to the movies, so if you wish to find out nothing... then i guess you should stop reading.

So what is the series all about then? The formula remains exactly the same for each and while some see that as boring and unoriginal then they clearly aren’t getting the point of the franchise. It’s like a ride, sit back and just enjoy it! Anyways someone has a premonition which sees everyone die causing them to freak out and exit said danger zone taking a group of others with them. Lucky them... or so you think until one by one they gradually start to die in weird and random accidents in the order they were intended to die before. It seems Death doesn’t take to kindly to those who mess up his plan.

Final Destination A.K.A “The one that started it all off”

To most people this is seen the best of the bunch and I can see why. It had an original concept, a decent cast, an eerie feel to it and felt different to the typical slashers that were flooding the horror genre at the time.

While the premonition accident aboard a plane was over pretty quick and not nearly as eventful as later disasters, just the idea of a plane explosion in itself was enough to unsettle you as it was entirely possible for us to be in a similar situation. As for the actual “natural deaths” that occurred after, these felt more down to earth and less over the top. Strangled on a wire, hit by a bus, struck by a falling sign, they all felt plausible and real. While later movies went in favour of gore, this focused on the gritty realism and it’s why it rates so highly in my eyes.

While the looming deaths are likely the main attraction to this movie, I found it just as interesting to see the later effects on our main lead, Alex and how he tried to defeat Death by “accident proofing” a nearby cabin. Seeing how extremely cautious he is and paranoia setting in is a unique take on the idea that we don’t really see in the later sequels as much.

This definitely feels like it has a darker tone as well as less gore than it’s sequels, but the original is still a great hour and a half of entertainment that is bound to make you jump and contemplate when your time may be up.

Final Destination 2 A.K.A “Gore = More"

A new director and a different direction for this movie as tongue and cheek seem to overpower the more serious tone of its predecessor and I for one love it. While the first was a great movie, this one takes that, adds more of everything and turns it into one hell of a pumped up horror flick. The plot remains the same but with a new cast (as well as one familiar face) as they too cheat certain death from a pile up on the highway. Hands down this is my favourite premonition of the three, from the build up right up to the picking off of each individual cast member, it’s intense and doesn’t give you a chance to recover.

While the opening disaster is great, the deaths are what really steal the stage as here the gore is ramped up to eleven. A ladder through the head, sliced by barbed wire and a decapitation involving an elevator are just some of the bloody and exciting scenes to expect. When I watched this at the cinema each scene was met with cheers, laughter and gasps from the audience which only added to the experience. It never takes itself serious and knows what the people want. Inventive deaths that leave you disgusted but oddly satisfied at the same time.

My favourite of the three so far, but here’s hoping the forth can topple it.

Final Destination 3 A.K.A “Fun of the Fair”

And so we move onto the third one. Honestly not too much can be said that isn’t that different from the second. You have another opening disaster (this time aboard a rollercoaster at a fun fair) and a handful of fun, over the top kills. While not much can be said that hasn’t been said before on the other two there is one standout feature of this movie that really impressed me, and that’s the lead up to the opening rollercoaster crash. Whether it’s because we know what to expect now and we know it’s only a matter of time before it happens I don’t know, but the build up is so beautifully done with a great piece of music to accompany the ride along as we go through loops and corkscrews counting down the precious seconds till the body count starts climbing. The opening credits too are great to watch and multiple views will reveal clues to the deaths later on.

One small addition here is the use of photographs to guess how certain characters will bite the bullet. It adds an element of detective work, and while most of the time it may never go as you expect, it’s still fun to at least guess.

Sure the goriness is expected this time making it have a little less impact, but like two this is another exciting but more importantly fun rollercoaster ride (exclude the pun) that leads us nicely to...

The Final Destination A.K.A “Final Destination 4”

And so we move onto the newest edition. Hitting cinemas on August 28th, The Final Destination doesn’t exactly try anything new by the looks of it and that’s perfectly fine. There is another premonition showing a disgusting accident taking the lives of many, there is an escape of said premonition and of course there are many many gory deaths proceeding. We’ve had a plane explosion, motorway pileup and rollercoaster crash, so what exactly is next? You would have thought maybe a boat, but instead this time the accident takes place on a NASCAR type race track seeing racers lose control and collide with the audience watching. Sounds intriguing and from the looks of the trailers it looks exciting and action packed.

In perhaps the biggest surprise however, the movie is also shown in full 3D which should add another layer of shock and scares to the film. Movies are for entertainment and if you enjoyed the first three then watching the new one in the third dimension should be reason enough to go to the theatre one more time.

The Final Destination series isn’t a classic one nor is it going to win any awards, but it was never set out that way. If you’re in the cinema watching any one of these you know why you’re there. Gore, ingenious deaths and to laugh, gag and jump out of your seat. I can’t think of any other movie out there that does all these together so well and it’s for that reason alone that August 28th cannot come soon enough. A great series hopefully coming to a fitting close.
