Will Ferrell’s latest comedy has been released and with him being one of the biggest actors at the moment, especially in comedy. This film has a lot to live up to!
Ferrell plays a scientist who’s theories are mocked by most, Dr. Rick Marshall. The film opens with Marshall being interviewed on a TV chat show, to try raise more money for his research into Time Warps. As some of you will have seen from the trailers, this ends with Dr. Marshall trying to fight the host for being ridiculed. The film then moves on a few years where we see he has now become a teacher at a primary school. Even being laughed at by the children of his class, once his lesson is over, a young lady named Holly speaks with him regarding his research which he has abandoned. Telling him she loves his work and studied it at Cambridge, she persuades him to continue his work and for them to go into the field and try his “tachyon amplifier”. Marshall’s theory that tachyon’s can be utilized by his machine to control Time Warps and move through Time. The newly formed duo head to the desert where tachyon readings are high and they might be able to get some results. When they arrive at a small attraction site, called The Devil’s Cave, they meet a simple man named Will. Who takes them on a tour of the Cave, while inside the amplifier begins to work and a time portal opens, sucking the three of them into an unknown world!
The film continues from here with the adventure of getting home and proving that Marshall’s theories have been right all the time. They must find the Tachyon Amplifier that was lost when going through the time warp but when met with Dinosaurs, evil reptile mutants and monkey men, they will have a harder time doing this than first expected.
So not the typical Will Ferrell film, but i have to say that i enjoyed it. Probably only 20% of the people who see the film will agree with me, and they will all be Will Ferrell films. Without him in the film would have been pretty awful, that said Danny Mcbride who plays Will does have his share of the comedy and puts some good comedy moments in (aided by Will Ferrell). If you take this film as serious you will be disappointed. If you remain open minded and just watch the film not expecting to see any comical genius then you might be pleasantly surprised. I found myself laughing at the stupidity of scenes and Will Ferrell just being funny. I know most people will dislike the film due to the poor plot and silly humour, but it made me and my friends laugh (my girlfriend fell asleep!). Maybe this is one to wait and rent, i would say Will Ferrell fans may be disappointed but some, such as myself, will just be able to enjoy the simple comedy that is ever present in the film.
I mentioned before that the comedy stems from Will Ferrell and he was always going to be the focal point in the film, there are good moments with other characters but normally that are linked to what Ferrell has said or done.
So as an overall i have to say you should probably avoid the film until DVD or it is on TV, £7 would probably be too much to pay as it is a simple comedy which lacks any depth and the story is poorly written with moments that are just stupid. That said, Will Ferrell made plenty of people laugh and kept it all together making it a pleasant hour and a half for me.
