As the years are passing the graphics on consoles are getting more and more realistic and smooth. Look at the ps2 the graphics are smooth and the lanscape is brilliant, looking better than ever and will continue to do so throughout the future. Games like smugglers run where you can breese through the desert and mountains etc, and it looks so good.
But in the future how good will the graphics get, when and how will they improve more and more. The gamecube ps2 and xbox are all 128 bit graphics and they look excellent but how much more could they look even better than they appear at the current time.

Oh yeah? I'm only running on 10% of mine. :D
Still, graphics are pretty good just now and since we can scan in motion and images and film things onto our computer it's only a matter of time until we can link our brains directly or at least see into dreams and scan to the smallest detail anything in the world ever (Those spy satellites should come in handy).
as far as the functionallity of our brains goes the other 90%ish (what is it now 87%?) could be for anything from storing the real us (hey maybe these bodies are just temporary hosts, giving a good explanation for reincarnation) to telepathy and world manipulation to the meaning of life. All of which would be nice, of course the other 90% could be for something less agreeable like a "greater being" (God for instance) having created us to be a giant computer or washing machine. Who would have thought computer graphics would be meaning of life stuff?
Anyway, i'm more than happy with graphics as they are today and I expect that improvements will slow as we have less and less to improve on, so we may never see a real fake world on our direct to brain computers in our lifetimes.
Let's not think about the future and keep our minds on the progression of graphics in the present lest we lose ourselves somewhere inbetween. That means no worrying if we are all already in a giant computer simulated world in a similar manner to the Matrix too.
To be honest I think current graphics would be a bit wasted trying to emulate real life.
I want to see things in my games that I'm not going to see walking down the street, or in a zoo. I'd much rather face a boss that is a huge monster, like some of the Zelda bosses, than a bloke with lots of guns! So as graphics look better, and more realistic they should not be moving towards this, but away from it! I want to explore huge 3D worlds like no others I've ever seen. I want to use weapons so incredible they make my jaw drop.
I don't want to wander the streets of London past hundreds of realistic looking people in my games, I'd rather walk through a busy space-port, around creatures from all parts of the universe!
So, just to re-iterate graphics have the power now to produce amazing almost life-like visuals, I want this quality, but certainly not this content!
So could graphics go beyond reality? Surely they did years ago, when aliens and spaceships were dipicted in games.
More realistic graphics is definitely an advantage of the new generation of consoles coming to us, but what would really make the games more realistic, in terms of appearance, would be more realistic lip-synching, more realistic, and physically possible movements.
Little changes like time passing, and weather will also add to this. Weather effects should become more realistic, so you could watch the skies turn grey. Watch the rain fall, then watch puddles form, and eventually dry up.
How about seasonal changes too, with there being more or less daylight hours, people dressed differently in summer to winter and the like.
Though I know it will happen, I'd rather graphics never reach the level of total realism. It just wouldn't be fun anymore. In a book I have on Game Design, there are numerous interviews with some of the leading designers around and nearly all of them say not to try and imitate reality. After all, if reality were fun, we wouldn't need videogames.
One day, and this is quite obvious, graphics will look as good as real life does. Which will be quite worrying... but emmensely fun. The main problems of making graphics look like reality would be the fact that people could easily get confused between the two, and it would seem almost normal to go around shooting people. Not something I'm looking forward to doing.
The idea of the ultimate graphics, I think, would be best for use in games such as flight sims... things that would potentially be dangerous in real life, but would be just as exhilarating to do on a computer.
Of course, you wouldn't be able to jump off a cliff, and feel the air beating on your face, or the g-forces pull your skin and organs to the top of your body...
At least, not for a while.
In the meantime, we get to do with excellent looking games, on all platforms.
But what about taking graphics beyond reality? Taking them further than the most obvious point?
Imagine something that is beyond reality, design something that has never been seen before... visions, sounds, feelings...
Would it be possible to make a game look better than reality? Are our brains powerful enough to make something look beyond perfect?
The answer to this is probably no... we are unable to simply draw who we will fall in love with, but we can instantly fall in love with something... or so I believe.
One thing that could possibly be better than reality, however, is dreams. Simple enough in premise, taking dreams and turning them into real life is much more difficult.
I have dreamed of things that I have never seen before in life, beautiful and detailed things. I believe dreaming to be the highest point that our brains can achieve, creating some kind of universe to keep us entertained...
It is known that our brains only ever use a fraction of it's power... is it possible that dreams are the main function of the brain, beyond thinking and controlling our body?
Perhaps. But then to harness the power of dreams would be almost impossible. To take graphics beyond the highest level...
I say dreams are the most creative design of the human body... able to bring about beautiful ideas, while at the same time being cryptic and enigmatic enough to make us easily forget about them, and to pass as something that "everyone does".
