Makes the Carling Cup a little more useful, as I would assume a tie against Celtic/Rangers will attract decent crowds, and the silverware itself will also come with a decent stack of prize money. A good injection of cash into the game for whichever mid-table team wins it and, probably more importantly, for whichever old-firm team participates.
Good idea? Or not?
carling cup is pointless enough !!!
two more major points remaim: Only 2 teams are likely to win the CIS. In england lets say the winners our boro or villa. I have to say i can't see a stampede to remote controls to see aston villa vs rangers in a match that means nothing.
or the second and worse option: if you had asked anyone on tuesday who would win the league cup, most would have said arsenal or Chelsea, and probably chelsea as they can put out a proper team as arsenal were taking it less seriously. Now Both teams are still in the champions league and have good last 16 draws, and are probably both going to get to the last 8. that is only two matches before the final. The carling super cup is scheduled for the day before the champs league final, and would be in danger of being cancelled on its first ever time if either team gets to the final and one the league cup as expected.
The cup would be good fun but a little hollow, i would much rather see a scrapping of the CIS cup and admit all scottish league teams to the league cup. to give a better rounded competition.

Ahhh, but those good old Celtic fans know how to add the British touch. I was at the Celtic v Rovers game last year at Ewood and on the walk into the ground had a thousand Celtic fans shouting sectarian abuse at me, and ever other Rovers fan that went past. Now, it was kind of more relevant for me as I am from N. Ireland and fall nicey into the category of people they dislike and were aiming the abuse at - but they had no way of knowing this.
Nice Scottish fans yelling totally irrelevant abuse at the overwhelmingly English fans over a conflict in Ireland/N. Ireland. Could it get more British? :)
The only trouble, is that it would start to get boring after the first 4 or 5 times. It would be Rangers or Celtic everytime.
> ...And how great it was to see Liverpool knocked-out! ;D
Ouch, not funny :(
Very good idea, I'd like to see that on a regular basis.
Whenever teams from England and Scotland meet in competition, it's always a `big thing´ - like when Celtic payed Liverpool and Blackburn in the UEFA Cup, last season. Look how much of a fuss was made about it all, then.
...And how great it was to see Liverpool knocked-out! ;D
Seriously, though, this could give the likes of Sir Alex Ferguson a greater interest in the competition, with the chance to play either Celtic or Rangers (who else is EVER gonna win anything in Scottish Football?!?!), in a "real" `Battle of Britain´.
Somehow, I doubt even Wenger would field his `youth-team´ (face-it - they've loaned-out all their 'reserves'!!) against a rival team, even if Jeremie Aliadiare and co. DO managed to go all-the-way.
But then, it would hardly be a `Battle of BRITAIN´ between Arsénal and Celtic, would it... French players all-over one-team; all-sorts flooding the other!
But it is a good idea, anyway. Even if no-one WANTS to win the "Worthless Cup", they're still playing for a chance to beat Scotland's best. :)
