This might seem a strange question with an obvious answer, but its only obvious if you know the answer.
If I install XAMPP (PHP/MySQL/etc) on my local machine which is connected to the net, for local development/testing only, am I just as likely to get code injections on my local system as perhaps I might on a remote server?

As for injections, foolproof your code and you will not get any!
Anyway, you should be fine. I dont know your home set up, but its likely your webserver wont even be exposed to the outside world. If your machine is connected to the internet via a BB router then your local site would only be visible to the outside world if you set up your router to forward port 80 to your machine.
