Over the remaining weeks leading to Christmas, me and my girlfriend are watching some of our favourites:
Last week we watched The Grinch as she hadn't seen it before and is a big fan of Jim Carrey and The Cat In The Hat books. It's the story of a town inhabited by a population of people called 'The Who's' and the Christmas hating [For lack of a better word] freak, The Grinch who lives just beside them. When the annoyance of the holiday season gets too much for him, he decides to steal Christmas. Based on a classic DR. Seuss story, starring Jim Carrey and directed by Ritchie from Happy Days, it should be absolutely "who"elicious! Shame it isn't. It has its moments and uses some imaginative props and set pieces but overall it's just lacking something.
Saturday, we watched The Nightmare Before Christmas. Pure Tim Burton, which in my opinion is a good thing. Jack, The Skeleton King of Halloween Town is starting to find the usual, yearly traditions boring and feels his life is lacking something. When he accidentally stumbles into the Christmas world, he feels inspired by his newfound discoveries. He convinces the town to take part in an un-conventional Christmas with horrible consequences. Our Christmas film viewing was starting to improve. It's an entertaining film with some imaginative characters (personal favourites include the Oogie Boogie Man and the Trick Or Treater’s) and some catchy tunes scored by Danny "The Simpsons" Elfman. Not really your standard Christmas film and rather short but still enjoyable.
This is as far as we've got so far, but I'll continue with the films that we still have to come:
The Muppet Christmas Carol. With out a doubt my favourite Christmas film. A very, very good Muppet film especially as it was their first feature production after the death of Jim Henson. I now own this in DVD form thanks to HMV's current "Buy One Get One Free" offer on DVD's. City Of God and Muppet Christmas Carol for £17.99? T'is defiantly the season to be jolly! Kermit, Piggy, Gonzo and co take the classic but over-used Charles Dickens story of A Christmas Carol and reinvent it for a young generation. Throw Michael Caine into the equation as a very well portrayed Ebenezer Sgrooge, and you've got a classic on your hands. Great story, jokes, songs, and packed with Christmas Spirit. Fantastic!
Well I've run out of time so I won't go on in detail of other films on my watch list, which includes Santa Clause The Movie, Jingle All The Way, The Santa Clause and a few others, which I forget due to my haste.
So, I'll end in asking, what is your favourite Christmas movie and why?
Merry Christmas!
"It's turbo time"
perhaps not
"I have the ears of a snake"
Best Christmas film evah. Period.
Home Alone 1 + 2
Die Hard 1 + 2
Scrooged
more that I can't remember
