I'm having difficulties formatting the hard drive on the computer.

I Right-Click C:\ when I'm in My Computer then go down to Format. It comes up with a screen saying what capacity, what data storage, whether or not Fast Format. I press Start Format and I click Ok, I really do want to format it, then it comes up with a message box saying Windows cannot format drive C:\. Close any windows that have any links with the disk and close all screens that show the disk contents.

All Windows are closed apart fomr the format one and when I do Ctrl-Alt-Del the only process that isn't a system process which is running is Explorer.

Same happens when I go start\run\command\format c:

Any ideas how I do it?

Alternatively, repackage the computer into it's box it came delivered in and send it back to the manufacturer that it came from.......I think everyone else will know the rest :P

Or if you are going to re-install anyway then you can boot from the operating system disk and then delete partition and create a new one before re-installing.

What do you plan on doing with the drive after you've formatted it, as you certainly won't be able to load Windows :O[]

The reason why that doesn't work is you trying to use Windows to delete Windows, which obviously doesn't work. You'll need you recovery CD.

You cannot format a drive in use. Basically, when you're calling the format command, you're doing it from C: so it can't be formatted while in use.

Provided your copy of Windows is legal, grab the recovery CD and boot from thst instead.
