However, when you click on a link, it opens the file in Explorer, i.e., the screen is full of weird characters.
Anyone got any idea what I've done wrong, and how to sort it out?

It might be something to do with the operating system you are using - or version of IE. Because if I click a link directly it opens Windows Media Player for streaming the song.
When you click a link it probably can't do this :)
Tell your visitors to right click the link and click "save target as" to download the song :)
