Well, I got an installation of Debia going on my laptop, resizing the partitions dangerously without backing up first. I thought I lost Windows when I write over the partition table to accomodate the new settings, but not that LILO is installed everything is OK again. I just have to configure Debian now.

Try Knoppix. It's a Linux distribution that runs directly off a CD (doesn't touch your hard drive at all), autodetects everything (like graphics card / peripherals etc), and boots into a pretty KDE.

You can then have a go at looking what settings it has used, and try using them in your real installation.

In fact, if you like Knoppix, it's quite easy to install onto your hard-drive - you just run the knx-install script thats provided with it. The easiest Linux to install ever... probably.

It's annoying - it takes you three so many options, and I've gone through all of the possible combos but it still flickers. Grrr, why can't SUse just work?

Off the top of my head: /etc/X11/XF86Config Watch out for the capitals. There's an automated configuration utility for X but I can't remember the name of it right now.

Hmmm yeah I tried kdm but the monitor flickers, I guess I've messed up the config. And I have no idea how to find the file either.

Yeah, I was just about to post here asking how to get it onto X. All I have is the text logon screen.

Brilliant! As usual the careful and intuitive production that Freeola puts into everything it sets out to do, I am delighted.
Wonderful...
... and so easy-to-use even for a technophobe like me. I had my website up in a couple of hours. Thank you.
