Right I am designing an online community as part of a project.

Was just wondering if any of you had any suggestions as to ways to show that the user logged in isn't the only person using the site. ie to show that it is a community used by a number of people.

So for example you could take this place... these very forums. Which ways do you think it would be better to show that you aint the only one online at a particular time.

Have things like listing the names of all those online, number or posts, topics, users over a certain period of time and also since the thing started.

Any other ideas would be appreciated.

Cheers

In thinking about HHAT's idea maybe you could a friends list type thing, where you could add users that you liked, friends as it were, to a list. When they created a new topic, it would be highlighted.

For example, here on SR, I could put Grix Thraves on a list along with say Meka Dragon. Then, when either of them posted a new topic it would be highlighted.

Just a thought. It would be something a bit different.

How about having certain posts highlighted;

such as those posted by 'Mods' (Staffies) and those in which you've posted in and havent checked since posting..

Those are the ones I already have began to consider. Also considered a live chat feature with a list of folk signed in using it.

Then maybe some visuals just showing the users and their activity - still in thought about how to do this.

But thanks for your suggestions.

i dont really see what else you could do. stuff like MSN requires something on the users computer. just doing a simple whos on bar at the side would be the most obvious thing. you could do a guest book, but not everyone may sign in.

Maybe a thing on the side somewhere, stating how many members are online, and how many guests (the standard sort of thing).
And you can click on it, and it gives you details, such as maybe, the most amount of users that have been online at one time, or the most on that day.

Hmm.
