A HEART-FELT MESSAGE FROM AFGHANISTAN
10:00 - 31 October 2006
A Soldier serving in Afghanistan has sent a heart-warming message to his loved ones.
Lee Clarke (24), from the Willows estate, Grimsby, has been serving with the Royal Military Police since mid-September.But he has not forgotten the people who are most important to him.
Through the Telegraph, he sent this message to his grandparents, Peter (72) and Pat Garner (71).
"Thanks to you both for the great start in life you gave me. I owe you so much and I only pray I can repay you one day.
"Please don't worry or shed a tear for me. As long as I know I have you two back home praying for me, I shall return home safely.
"Counting down the days, love Lee."
He will be back for two weeks in February, and his tour ends in April.
Mrs Garner, of Cheshire Walk, on the Willows estate, was touched. She said: "He doesn't owe us anything, bless him.
"It is lovely. He has already rung me up today, and we have texted each other."
Lee calls his grandparents - who he lived with from the age of 13-and-a-half - several times a week, and they regularly exchange text messages.
"I'm glad we've got him as a grandson," Mrs Garner added.
Lee, who went to Whitgift School, is serving in the Kandahar region of southern Afghanistan.
He has mainly been doing police work, but has recently started joint patrols with the RAF.
It is his fourth year in the army and his first posting. He is due to go to Germany for two years on his return.
Mrs Garner, who has three children, five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, said: "We miss him terribly. It's nice when he comes walking in the back door with his big cheeky grin on his face and his bag full of washing."
Mr Garner added: "He sent me a text the other day saying, 'I'm okay, I'm hiding in a tank'."
Still full of humour as always :P
So anyone else got friends, family etc... out there?
There is a few other people i know out there but he is the person i know better then the rest.
Posting to Germany too, wonder if i can take his place :)
Any of you lot ever considered joining up and doing all this stuff! Think it would terrorfy me to be out there?
Not a close friend just someone I'll say "hi" to if we see each other but every so often I'll just think about him for some reason.
