I'm beginning to seriously look at a building a new computer. I want to do it myself from scratch. At the moment I'm looking at graphics cards.

Looking for sort of mid range, Radeon 9800 and FX 5900 are a bit too pricey. Maybe I could stretch to a 9800 non pro, I take it they outperform 9600 XT's?

Anyway, I came across this:
Sapphire Radeon 128MB 9600XT DDR DVI-i TV-Out Retail Box £120 inc VAT.

The reviews are of no use at all, but they are hilarious.
http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/products/index.html? action=c2hvd19wcm9kdWN0X3Jldmlld3M=&product_uid=55188

Anyway, basically I wanted some thoughts on what manufacturers were good, which were bad and which were downright ugly.

Also, can anyone suggest a good reviews site for graphics cards so I don't have to keep running back to you all with questions?

Cookie Monster was talking about his non pro 9800 and how with hacked drivers it runs as a pro version. Now I could maybe stretch to a 9800
but I was wondering how difficult it would be to get a hold of these drivers and if they were stable. Anyone know much about that?

Thanks very much in advance, most of you are pretty decent in your advice.

Having said that, Overclockers UK are better that Ebuyer all round (cheeper and better selection) and their tech support is top notch.

I wouldn't buy a graphics card from Ebuyer, there a bit limited on there choices and a bit pricey. Overclockers UK is better. As for Sapphire, there is a reason why they are cheeper than most other makes. I have heard some bad stories about them.

Yeah it is simple, but overclocking can mess up your card. I have a 9800 Pro and could overclock that as I have the tools and have alot of cooling in the case. The card is a Hercules, so has a cooper fan and heatsinks and comes with all the overclocking tools as its suppose to be a good overclocker. But really the performance upgrade wont be too much at the moment. Plus if you bust the card you got to go spend a £250-300 on a new one. Actually my card has a 3 year warrenty so I could probably get a free one.

Well as i've said in another thread you really can't install drivers and make it a 9800 Pro. The 9800 has VPU of 325mhz and RAM is 290mhz while the
9800 Pro has a VPU 380mhz and RAM is 340mhz. The only way to get a 9800 to a 9800 Pro is to overclock it.

Ah the old graphics card questions.

The graphics card you selected (The Sapphire 9600XT) is excellent for the price, I own a 9600pro and i'm very pleased with it's performance. There's no "good and bad" graphics card makers, but Sapphire are pretty decent.

The only thing i'll say about this 9600XT business is the fact that its just a 9600pro with higher clock speeds.

Oh and for websites - www.rage3d.com is a good place to start.

I think the drivers that Cookie Monster used we're "Catalyst Omega" drivers which are modyfied drivers for performance.

Heh. "I tried to slot this into the PCI slot but the plastic just snapped. Im not happy. I hope im given a replacement. I like the colour so it gets 4 stars.". Tsk, some people...

Anyway. I'll probably be checking this thread out as I'm after the same advice.
