The only trump card Microsoft could play is if they can make the X-box play exsisting PC games such as "Quake III", and play them well, then Microsoft could possibly convince even console loyalists to turn to buy the X-box.
Failing this however no true console gamer will buy the X-box, as we hate Microsoft because we know its trying to create itself a big monopoly...and we dont want a monopoly in the games market, because the best games are often produced by small third party companies.
lots of stuff.
But I believe that Sony have kind of found a way to get games exclusively on their PS2, whether deliberately, or not.
Many developers have said that the PS2 can be a bit of a pain to develop for, therefore not many developers will port PS2 versions of games to other platforms.
Likewise, the games that are on the other platforms are unlikely to be ported across, as it won't be that simple, but as the PS2 will no doubt have a rather large user base, they'll want to put out a different version of that particular game on the PS2. A version of the game that will take into account the PS2's strengths, and the tools that they have developed to program PS2 games.
Of course, this could just be another of my strange crackpot theories....

I only know of EA who have said that they will not develop for DC. And to be quite honest, even as a PS2 owner, I neither understand nor agree with that decision.
Who else is overlooking DC? Have they actually said that they won't develop for DC, or is that just the way they're heading?
Either way, Sony shouldn't be blamed for such decisions; they have signed a lot of developers for PS2, but very few - if any, in fact - are exclusive deals. So developers have only agreed to develop for PS2; they haven't agreed *not* to develop for any other platform.
If those developers then choose not to cater for any other particular platform, that is not Sony's fault... so anger/disgust at Sony is, IMHO, unjustified and aimed at the wrong company.
You may say that they're bound to sign exclusivity deals if offered enough money, and you'd be right. Which only serves to prove my other point, mentioned in another forum, that companies are in this business for the money.
Their are companies who resist such deals. For example, Microsoft also approached Polyphony Digital (makers of the Gran Turismo series, for those who don't know), but they were turned down.
If you're truly fair-minded, you (that's a general 'you', not specifically Dan_uk) should also be livid at (for example) Nintendo for buying Rare and preventing them from publishing on non-Nintendo platforms.

Ironic, isn't it... on the one hand, PS owners have been described as mindless idiots who buy anything released, and now you're saying that they're picky! :-)
Anyway, there's no absolute reason that PS2 should put anyone out of business. Regardless of PS2's success or failure, Dreamcast and other platforms - including the still-selling PS1 - are still there for them to develop for; PS2's existence is not preventing that.
In fact, by developing for PS1, they're actually getting the best of both markets. They could make games for every platform except PS2 and make more than enough money to stay in business. Only a few weeks ago, someone took great pleasure in telling us all that Gameboy games were outselling PS2 games, so I don't believe that any established company, no matter how small, can't stay in business.
It costs twice as much to make a game for the PS2 but as more people have a Dreamcast right now, the game would probably sell double on the DC.
As a result a huge deficit is made (especially as many people are buying the PS2 mainly for the DVD and those that do buy games are very picky so only SSX, Timesplitters and Tekken are making the profits) and these small companies go out of buisness!
I'll be honest, I don't like playstation, after the reviews and success of their first console they brought out a sequel if you will with the same number of controller ports, not that much more speed than an already released Dreamcast and so I think SONY hit the target a little low with the PS2.
I sincerely hope that the X-Box and the NGC blow the Greystation out of the water! Go Nintendo, Go!

Anyway, Can you believe that AOE: AOK is on the PS2.....disgusting!
