Over the past few years, there have been many, and I mean many, good films that have come out and this has made my decision for a top 5 very difficult but I think I have madea very good choice.
Here are my top 5 films over the past few years:
In my opinion, there have been many good films over the past few years and so I feel that I need to say what I think are the best films and why and so I have decided to list with an explanation of my top 7 films.
5) Road Trip - The film basically charts a funny collegiate dilemma involving a bunch of guys, 2 girls and a videotape! Sounds good even in vague terms don't it? It's been about a week since I've seen this film so I can't remember the characters names well, so forgive me if I keep referring to people as 'that guy' or 'that girl'. Anyway, the story begins and evolves around a student showing around a group of prospective new students around his university, and his ushering soon turns into a story (the film) that depicts him as both the narrator and the extra comedy in between. The story in question is that of a couple who have been 'hot' since they were kids, eventually have to cling onto a long-distance relationship as they go on to further education in different universities. And with the pestering of his friends, the boy in the relationship eventually gives into that temptation and lands a girl for a one-night stand as the result of a favoured girl bidding auction at uni. She however doesn't think it's a one-off. To add an extra bit of kinkiness the girl even persuades him to catch their 'fun' on film for documented prosperity (you should see his friends when they learn that he's made a film with that girl), but unfortunately this little document manages to find it's way into the wrong hands, as this guy usually sends video messages to his girlfriend, and entrusts his friends to post his latest copy which gets mixed up with the porn flick! Obviously in a panic, the guy assembles his friends and manages to convince a wire-framed nerd to borrow his Dad's car, and off they go to intercept the package in the most hilarious way, before the girlfriend sees it. And it'd be particularly even more hurtful since one of the girl's grandparents had just died! The narrator of the film is the one who stays behind to keep a lookout or something? And his antics are just as important and as hilarious as the main story line. Watch how he tantalises a snake to eat a mouse - freaky! Anyway, the main boys journey to get the tape couldn't be funnier, but I recommend that you see this film so I won't spoil it if you plan to see the film. But watch the transformation of the skinny nerd into a streetwise and confident lover machine, one of the guys get off on prostate stimulation, and get the excrement culled out of them in a black fraternity. It's just fun all the way, from start to finish - weaving in-between main plot and fillers. The ending of the film is happy naturally, but a little bit anticlimactic if you want to quench some blood thirst, but because of that it isn't an obvious ending, so it's still good. Anyway, the moral is don’t send sex tapes with other women to your ladies (and ladies vice versa), or at least don't trust your friends with handling/posting your mail! A must see, go out and see it now!
4) The Sixth Sense – If you've not seen this film yet, what the heck are you waiting for! I bought the DVD when the other half bought the 'puter (well, it had a DVD player inside). However, because I'm truly THE biggest Bruce Willis fan, I wanted to wait until I could see it on wide screen, so I had to wait a few extra months until I had collected enough beenz to buy a wide screen TV! This film was well worth the wait, Bruce in a truly captivating film, you could say I am biased, but I have only cried this hard once before at one other film – Philadelphia. The story goes like this - Child Physiologist 'Malcolm Crowe' (Willis), is haunted by his failure in helping a young boy, so when 'Cole Sear' (Haley Joel Osment) turns up with a similar condition, Crowe tries to help, little does he know that Coles' problem is that he can see the dead. No, I'm NOT going to tell you the rest, watch the film!
3) The Matrix - This has to be one of the best movies I have ever seen. It has great acting, great sets, great action, great themes, great sound, and most importantly a great story. This is an outstanding masterpiece of the science fiction genre. It will definitely be a classic for a long time. The level of detail is amazing. For example, they went through the entire movie and filtered out a lot of the blue and changed it to green. Blue is too happy of a color they said. All of the sets have extreme levels of detail. The sound is incredible. I got the DVD version and got to listen to it in Dolby Digital Surround sound and it was almost as good as when I saw it at the cinema. If you have a good home theatre system then I recommend this DVD for you it through the paces. It really shows off the range and power of Dolby Digital Surround sound. Not only are the sets and audio full of great detail but the story is to. The Matrix explains why some people has special powers like being able to lift and move objects with their minds. It also has an explanation for deja vu. There are also little gems stuck in the story itself. See if you notice when Morpheus (the Greek god of dreams, see...) asks the traitor to give him his phone, so he can call the operator, how he stalls until someone else gives up their phone instead, because he threw his in the trash. There are lots of these see how many you can find in the first viewing. The movie opens up with a great intense female action scene. You just don't get to see enough women kicking butt these days. The guys always get to have all the fun. But not in this movie. The women can give it out with the best of them. I love the special effects. The ship is great. The power plants are great. The sewer city is great. The sentinels are great. The "bugs" are great. The "bug" extractor is great. Bullet Time is great. The agents are great. The oracle is great. It really is just a great movie. The best thing about the movie is it is very human. It really isn't about the violence, or the fancy gadgets, or the special effects. It is about the future. It is about us. It is about our will to survive and to make up for and overcome our mistakes. It is about fighting for what is right and to fight the good fight. It is about truth. It is about being real. It is about caring. You will really start to care for this group of rebels.
2) Final Destination - The lead character in the film has the unusual knack of seeing things before they happen. Quite a party trick if you can manage it. But instead of seeing literally into the future, this boy (teenager) sees visions of death before they happen. The story begins as he sees the explosion of the plane he and his school friends have boarded moments before take off, and inadvertently causes a small group of them to leave with him in his panic. After that, the boy comes the conclusion that death has a ‘pattern’, and that because he and his friends had avoided death, they will all die regardless in some way. He and his friends set about trying to cheat death, and the bulk of the story follows the set pieces that show how they fail to avoid death, right until the end (?) This is such an awesome film and I would recommend it to anyone.
1) Gladiator - This was a top quality film starring Russell Crow and it deserved every bit of credit that it was given. As the film states, it is about a 'General who becomes a slave, who becomes a Gladiator, who defies an Empire'. Russell Crow showed that he is an outstanding actor in this film and those of you who have seen this film will agree with me. If anyone has not seen this film then you are missing out on something special as it really is a 'must see' film.
Up to now films about gladiators have struggled to gain credibility among the Hollywood mainstream. One only has to remember the hilarious moment in Airplane! where Captain Oveur, in addition to enquiring whether he has seen a grown man naked or been to a Turkish prison, asks the little visitor to the cockpit: "Joey, have you ever seen one of those gladiator movies?" This film from Ridley Scott puts paid to that. It's excellent in almost every respect and grabs the attention right from the start. The plot is uncomplicated: Maximus (Russell Crowe), the star general of Rome is entrusted by the outgoing Emperor Marcus Aurelius (Richard Harris on top acting form) to give Rome back to the people to ensure that his evil son Commodus (Joaquin Phoenix) doesn't get into power. Unfortunately it all goes wrong and the new Emperor Commodus orders Maximus and his family to be executed. Maximus escapes and the rest of the film involves him killing lots of people in his new role as slave and gladiator as he plots his revenge against Commodus. Highlights include an excellent Richard Harris at the start, plus Oliver Reed in his best role yet as the manager of the gladiators. The best acting prize however goes to Joaquin Phoenix who manages to combine with great effect Commodus' smiling attempts to gain favour among the people with his increasingly demented and evil episodes. The battle scenes transfix you, Ridley Scott managing to convey the raw savagery of hand-to-hand battle with its sword injuries and decapitations better than anyone up to now. Very little down side to this film. The ending is a little cheesy and on second viewing became almost unbearable. The choirs of angels singing and the cinematography lends the ending, particularly the dream sequence featuring Maximus' wife and child, the air of an expensive car ad - not necessarily surprising as Ridley Scott spends most of his time making ads nowadays. Don't worry though; the first 98% of the film should leave you sufficiently dazed to let this go. All in all highly recommended.

The one I saw had Smith and Martin Lawrence in a typical Jerry Bruckheimer action movie with predictably humourous quips, car chases and a woman that stood around needing rescuing all the time.

Fantastic film!
Here are some of my favourites today, don't expect them to be on the list again tomorrow though, I'm fickle!
1) The Lost Boys. It has vampires in it. I has a great soundtrack. It has vampires in it. It's cool. Did I mention that it had vampires in it?
2) The Truman Show. I like this, because it was an idea I once had myself. And Jim Carrey is fab.
3) From Dusk Till Dawn. It has vampires in it. And Harvey Kietel. Tarentino worked on it and starred in it too. And it had vampires in it.
4) The Green Mile. Read the book. Fantastic. Saw the film, was not disappointed.
5) The Empire Strikes Back. No singing or dancing. Yoda. battle for Hoth. "I am your father Luke" Need I say more?
As I said, I'm fickle, tomorrow I might put the other Star Wars films in the top 5. Maybe Jackie Brown would get a look in too, because Samuel L Jackson is so damn cool. So Shaft is good too then. And Pulp Fiction. On a more gruesome day American Psycho might make the list. Or A Nightmare On Elm Street.
Now the worst films in recent memory include:
1) Lost In Space. I've only once left the cinema bafore the end of a film. This was that film.
2) Batman and Robin. To think I spent good money watching on this film!
3) East is East. Not exactly bad, just not funny. I rented it because I thought it might be funny. I was very disappointed.
4) Jack. I don't like Robin Williams when he's trying to be funny. I like him much less when he's trying to be serious. Here he tries both, whilst playing the part of a kid in a mans body. It sucked so bad, they let Bill Cosby be in it!
5) Joe Versus the Volcano. Was this supposed to be a comedy? I never was quite sure. I watched it, and was bored.
I'm sure I've seen worse films than those, but films so bad usually get blocked from ever returning to my memory. Ever.
