In one of my Spanish lectures, the lecturer said that in formal English it's not proper to say:
"In the corner was a bundle..."
But apparently you have to say:
"In the corner THERE was a bundle..."
Can anyone say if this is right, or if both are in fact, as I think, correct?

Your lecturer seems to be right.
what about :
"Twas a bundle in the corner"
