It isn't necessary immediately but soon I'll need to build a home network of some sort. It needs to support a PC which can be wired, one PC which has to be wireless and an Xbox.

I have two set ups that I have come up with that are reasonable, and going by my limited knowledge, suffice for the job.

Using Dabs.com complete with quicklinx:
Dabsvalue ADSL Conexant 4 Port (router, built in 4 port switch) 17P8WS £45
3Com (Comms & Networking) 11mps Wireless Access Point 2NDRWS £57.57
Dabsvalue 802.11b 11Mbps USB Stick 2Q2ZWS £22
Grand Total = £130.44 inc VAT and delivery

Or:
Actiontec Electronics ADSL Modem + Wireless Router 1 Port 284JWS £57.57
Dabsvalue 8 Port 10/100Mbps Switch 2J7VWS £16
Dabsvalue 802.11b 11Mbps USB Stick 2Q2ZWS £22
Grand Total = £99.68 inc VAT and delivery.

Just wondered what you thought of the various pieces, if you had any better suggestions etc. Used Dabs simply because it was easy to find things and get a bit of info.

Any advice appreciated.

Thanks for the advice guys. I originally had come up with individual router and access points etc because there was a chance I might not need the wireless in the end and that way I would only need to buy the router. Also what had put me off was the price of the combined wireless routers/switches/ADSL modems, but I was obviously looking in the wrong places.

I've since realised that just getting the one thing would be better, it is roughly the same price or cheaper than indiviual things and it would take up less desk space.

So I've now ordered one off of Ebuyer. I'm sure I'll live to regret that, but you never know I might get lucky.

I use the Netgear DG824M. It looks very nice; it's childsplay setting up port forwarding etc; and now that there is a firmware upgrade it's very stable even when you're trying to crash it.

I think cclcomputers.com have it, but you may need to contact them to check it's the one with the built-in modem

Thats the one I was going to recommend. Thought I would post a link to a page with a few models with reviews as well.

Look at these at the top of the page http://www.adslguide.org.uk/reviews/

Look at the different Routers and get one with built in wireless as then if something is going wrong your not trying to work out whether its the router or the wireless access point. You can see from the reviews what sort of features they have, set up etc. Then all you would need would be the wireless cards for the laptop or PCs etc.

This is much more up your street, as it's a high quality box that will do everything you want in one go, but neither dabs, ebuyer or overclockers have it in stock at the moment :O(
