I beat Metal Sonic on the 5th November 1996.

It is difficult with Knuckles but not impossible. His ability to climb walls helps on the final boss.
To beat the metal sonic, hit him twice in the head when he lands at the start. He'll curl up in a ball and slide along the ground. When he stands up again, hit him twice in the head again. He'll then remain upright and boost along the floor. Careful not to hit his spikes and you can hit him twice there or wait until he's standing again. From what I remember, you only need 6 hits.

Sonic 2 is impossible if you play as Knuckles... Well, NEARLY impossible. The boss where he has the orbs that spin around him is really hard to get passed as knuckles can't jump as high as you need.
