He wasn't sure how he fought, hand to hand. Maybe it was mostly kung fu, maybe it was karate. His style had merged. All he had learnt over the years from his opponents, books, anything he could get his paws on.
But the sword was his soul. The essense of fighting, of defence, of control. So light to his touch, that it almost made his body float a few centimetres above the ground, almost sensual as he sliced downwards as if his body was silk in an airless world.
The koala bear was not built for speed. Nature had not intended for it to discover it's inner spirit and dabble in these ways. No matter how complete Terrence could become as a koala, he knew that there were animals that could always be stronger, faster.
Terrence opened his eyes with the thin metal a millimetre away from the tip of his nose. He may be limited, but he had one thing that others didn't always possess.
Confidence.
The treetops stood tall, knotted by the bamboo pathways, houses and shelters. Ropes, ladders and lifts littered the trees, while the bobcat stood at the other end of the long platform. He was dancing in almost slow motion, swiping his thin sword around his body, scratching and slicing the bamboo floor as he span his long black gown around himself, before twirling the blade in his hands, to come to a slow stop with it neatly sat on his shoulder, narrowing his eyelids to a stance.
Terrence blinked slowly, as if to fully push his spirit into his mind and soul. There was no breathing, nothing but losing yourself in the blade. To even consider breathing would allow your concentrating to fall. And confidence or not, these were not times to take lightly.
The bobcat ran towards Terrence, swinging his sword around his right hand. Terrence gripped and relaxed the tension of the handle, and let his mind become only what he saw and felt.
The blade sailed past Terrence's face, slicing the air in front of him. He bent backwards, then to the side, gliding the blade across towards the feet of the bobcat.
Cartwheeling sideways to avoid the stroke, the bobcat's gown flowed calmly downwards before being flicked back up as his feet hit the side of a tree. Terrence somersaulted backwards as the bobcat caught hold of a branch, swinging and slashing towards where he stood.
Landing on one knee, Terrence looked to the side quickly, a rope hung from a treehouse above him. He stood to a run, then launched himself at it, swinging himself around in a half-circle with his claws gripped around the twine, slashing downwards to cut only the bamboo floor of where the bobcat's shins were. The bobcat had lept forward, over Terrence's blade, to land to a bouncing handstand, and eventually cut through the rope as he cartwheeled back to his feet, causing Terrence to somersault from the grip.
Terrence landed, then looked up. He threw his blade over his head to stick into the side of a bamboo house. He ran towards the wall, then leaping to a handstand, and landing with his paws on the blade that stuck out from the side. He launched himself high to the roof of the house, pulling the blade out of the wall as he flew.
The bobcat glared up at Terrence, now standing with his sword held out in front of him on the roof of the bamboo house.
Terrence griped the handle again as the bobcat ran to jump off the side of another bamboo house, almost smashing in the wall with his feet. He somersaulted and landed over Terrence onto the over side of the roof. Gritting his teeth, the bobcat sliced straight through the roof of the house while Terrence leaped sideways, and then letting out a small yell as the roof gave way, leaving them to fall into the house.
Terrence had no time to think as the bobcat's sword came crashing down over his body. He rolled out of the way, then jumped onto the table, with the sword coming slicing down over him again, cutting the table clean in half. The bobcat, becoming increasingly irritated at the koala's speed and agility, picked up a clay pot from the mess of the room, and threw it in Terrence's direction, who deflected it from the air with his blade.
Finding himself stuck in the corner of the shack, the bobcat leaped towards Terrence with his sword raised behind his head. Terrence turned whilst slicing his sword through the bamboo wall, then launched himself threw it, snapping the weak wall as he cannonballed out of the way of the bobcat's steel.
A yell came from inside the house as Terrence began climbing a rope ladder with his sword in it's sheath for the moment. Withdrawing it again as he reached the top, he watched as the bobcat quickly swung from branch to branch, up to where Terrence stood. The bobcat could easily become deadly if Terrence made a single error, but fortunately, the bobcat seemed to be impatient and volitile.
Compelled by the blade, Terrence defended himself as the bobcat launched down at him from the trees above. Only slightly rolling to the side, the bobcat kicked Terrence hard, winding him and sending him sailing down into the roof of another bamboo building.
He smashed through the roof, bruised by the bobcat's foot, landing in a large pile of clay pots. The bamboo and clay had sliced his face and exposed arms. He quickly stood, trying to regain his vision, and sliced a circle around his feet, then climbing down onto the underside of the platform supporting the house.
There was a large thump as Terrence heard the bobcat land in the shack above him, and the platform shook like thunder. He looked around, hanging from the bamboo, then crawling away as the bobcat looked down through the hole Terrence had cut, growling and pulling his body back into the room.
The shack was supported by four corner supports. He clawed his way towards the nearest one, then stopping in horror as he watched a sword suddenly slice down near his face. When it was withdrawn, he crawled further, as the bobcat's sword was thrusted downwards with every few seconds, close to where he hung.
Terrence sliced straight through the first support of the home, and the weight tilted the bamboo structure towards the corner. Wasting no time, Terrence quickly clambered towards the second support to the sound of snapping bamboo.
The bobcat, quickly changing his mind about stabbing the ground, kicked pots and chairs from his way and hurried towards the door.
Terrence slashed the second support, and the structure started to tear completely. The bamboo of the floor snapped, breaking away as the weight of the bobcat inside began to force it downwards.
Terrence lept out from the underside of the platform, feeling the plummeting bamboo rub close to his cotton gown. He gripped onto a rope hung tight in front of him with his hand and foot, feeding a lift from further down the trees.
The whole shack collapsed and fell into pieces, and Terrence watched as the bobcat, still inside, screamed out as it smashed it's way down branches to the depths of the ground below. The screams quickly became what seemed to be a dreadful silence.
Terrence sheathed his blade, feeling for the blood on his face. He wiped it on his paws and looked at it. It started to rain.
Descriptive action scenes work when you can see it, and I could visualize this.
Very good.
But no. Hell no.
Terrence is a koala bear. Marvelous.
Fighting a bobcat.
My head hurts. But in a good way.
EXTREEMEEE SENTTEENCEE STRUCCTTURRRINNGG!!!!
And various use of paragraphs.
It's hard to create tension in sentences. Having to read to the end of each one...
Unless you could
You know
Encourage people a bit
To speed read
So you could
Well
Hit points
Interest
Plot the way
In a way, kinda tell the story by using the bare minimum of words, spacing them apart like timing. Could that work?
I'd have to try that soon, see how it turns out.
Thanks for the comments though. :)
Because fight scenes can be great, but so many people tend to focus on them and forget the story.
I've not read one in a LONG time though so I liked this one, even without context! :-)
I just realised how fantastically cool a kung fu koala bear with a samuari sword would be, so decided to write a bit.
It's the first time I've ever tried writing action... I tend to keep away from it, because well, it sucks. Tried my best though, just to see what would happen.
I have officially run out of descriptive terms.
