Yep. You probably set a wrong variable. You can easily get a 100 min film to about 1.6 Gb in SVCD quality.

Get the DVDs when they come out?

Did you try DVD2SVCD?

No probs. http://www.dvdrhelp.com/ has good guides and links to tools. You'll just have to experiment with different settings and tools to see which works best for you.
