Yes, forever.
And, surprisingly, it doesn't involve gay porn, french women or a movie license.
No, my game relys totally on gimmicks.
The idea is to take a completely new and out there genre, and use it to all its potential. Matthew suggests that using platforming would be a perfect starting stone towards making this totally innovative (read 'gimmicky') game.
this isn't the idea alone, however - if I wanted to make a crappy platform game, i'd have e-mail SEGA. No, my idea is to change the face of gaming forever with an idea.
the main character in this game of mine could be a washed up game character who failed to make a successful transition to 3D... lets call him 'Splonic', just to give himself a namesake. After the whole gaming world changed to 3D, Splonic was promised big selling games with huge world for him to explore and mess around in for the rest of eternity, all whilst his company, 'Say Grrrr' planned to take over the console buissness.
Splonic spent his money on holidays and women whilst Say grrr made his new home, presuming he'd make it all back in the next game.
Unfortunately, sales were bad, and so was splonic bank account - he owed 3,000 rings to the bank, and he was broke.
Now, in the 128 bit era, you take control of Splonic as he tries to take control of the Gaming world again. Battling your way through many different worlds of innovative design (an ice level, what next?), you try to make Splonic popular once again.
The problem is that splonic still has ties to his 2D roots, and occasionally goes back to his 2D style to impress the ladies, and try to get some self respect back.
This is where the gimmick comes in - you must exploit this pshcizophrenic personality of Splonic for your own needs - parts of the splonic world can only be accessed by his 2D alter ego, meaning you've got to transfer between the 2 to solve puzzles and such. You'll need to get into 2D mode to slip though cracks in the door, to sneak past enemies, to go down drains and, basically, access areas you previously couldn't. the problem is, in his 2D state, Splonic is nowhere near as pressing as his 3D counterpart, meaning he weighs much less, is much smaller and can do much less, meaning the 3rd dimension is needed for power, opening doors, turning on switches and reaching those high places.
Don't you just love gimmicks.
Anyway, on top of the original storyline, halfway through the game, as a twist, you use your 2D alter ego to slip into a Say grrr meeting, where you find out they are planning to get another character as the figure, and, so, you must also sabotage game development, confuse and kidknap developers and basically do your best to delay your demise.
What do you think, EA? Great game or what?
