Outrun, it's a gaming legend. While other racers may have turned to the simulation side or become wrapped in modern trappings of customisation, Outrun stays true to its roots.

Outrun Online Arcade, a new downloadable game on PSN and Xbox Live Arcade, is no exception. In fact, it's just an update of the Outrun 2 Arcade (SP) Machine. I say 'Just' but this in itself was as pure and perfect an arcade driving experience as you could get.

The main game remains as simple as choosing one of 10 Ferraris and getting from A to B across 5 different checkpoints from a choice on the map. Go left or right before the checkpoint and you choose a different road. The scenery vastly changes between these different roads, meaning that you have lots of options open to change your race. However, the right hand side of the map is progressively harder than the left, giving you something to aim for.

In addition to this, the main mode now has drift, like Ridge Racer and perfecting this is the key to getting good times or even staying within the tight time limits at all. It works brilliantly and feels just right for this type of game.

When you've finished playing the main game there are a few other options; Heart Attack and Time Attack. Heart Attack gets you to perform tasks for your girlfriend and passenger to win her heart. It's fun and different enough to mix things up. Time Attack is, as it sounds, a race against the clock with ghost cars from your previous fastest laps.

Multiplayer is the biggest change from the arcade game. Join 5 friends online for a flat-out race to the end. It's simple and doesn't offer anything like ranked matches, but then this goes with the feeling of simplicity that the rest of the game provides.

With more unlockable content (well, any) and better multiplayer this might have been the arcade racer to beat them all. As it stands, Outrun Online Arcade is still an almost perfect arcade racer that made me fall in love with the franchise all over again.

Over the years I've become very jaded after many bad experiences with customer services, you have bucked the trend. Polite and efficient from the Freeola team, well done to all involved.
