You can get around this by putting permanent marker on the 'protective banding'. Apparently.
As for coding CDs into MP3, I use iTunes. It'll even burn CDs for me.
Just in case that you, CDex rips all. I can listen to stuff I've bought the way I want to - cheers to Sony and friends for going out of their way to make that difficult.
