groundbreaking at the time. If it wasn't for this game, I doubt "Resident Evil" would be a whole different beast I think.

As is the next in the NOLF series, "Contract J.A.C.K"

The game, along with the sequel, where criminally overlooked by the general gaming public despite the praise they both got. This is perhaps one of the reasons that the forthcoming expansion pack for NOLF 2 is leaning more towards the action aspect of the game and ditching the stealth bits.

I daresay I would be the same if I had played them in the same order.

"Ultima Underworld" is still considered by many to be Warren Spectors crowning glory, giving a full 3d environment years before Quake but I have never managed to get fully into it because of the small viewing screen (and the fact it took me nigh on three weeks to get out of the castle)

I played them in reverse order, so I may be swayed by that.

Oh,I think the underrated tag is misleading too. I think the list is based on poor sales.

And Bane, just to clear up, I still love SS2, having finished it 3 times in each path and once with the "rebirth" mod. Its just got a few problems that didn't make it as good as the first for me, which was the second PC game to make me jump ("Alone in the dark" being the first)

I felt there was WAY to much back and forward in the sequel, but managed to get around this by storing all of the chemicals in the main lift. Still, it was frustrating. Once you got into the body of the many, it basically degenerated into a FPS.

The plot in the first was fantastic, and the voice of Shodan still creeps me out when i hear it. "puny human, how like an insect you are, creeping and skulking around my corridors". Brrrrrrrrrrrr.

Poorer graphics and sound, but less linear gameplay, a better story and I felt, more atmosphere. Oh, the customisable interface was years ahead of anything else too.

Good to see Ico up there - absolute gem played by roughly six people.

Some of them seem a bit weird though, Operation Flashpoint? Was that not huge? Dito No One Lives Forever and Alone In The Dark. Maybe I’m just assuming they're popular as I enjoyed them, same with Rez, but then I know that one is just because I’ve told everyone I know about that so a disproportionate number of them have it.

Not played most of them, but here:

19. No One Lives Forever - Good, humourous FPS.

9. Planescape: Torment - eh? This has a HUGE following! It's not underrated at all!

7. Grim Fandango - agreed, excellent adventure game, but it wasn't "Monkey Island" so few people got into it.

3. System Shock - surpassed in every way by the sequel, which is held in the high regard with which it deserves.
