Ok, my Asus a7v8x motherboard supports a maximum speed processor of an athlon 2.4Ghz.

What on earth is this in Athlon terms?
2100 xp + ?
2600 xp + ?
3000 xp + ?

(I'm mentioning xp as thats the os I use)

I've only replaced the processor once, and the speeds are not my strong point, so can someone give me an indication of what I should be looking for?

Thanks in advance.

Marvelous. Thanks all. I realise that athlon processors were differently numbered from the traditionally numbered intel Ghz but I know what I'm looking for now.

As to 64 bit processors, that 350 quid for the lowest, plus a new motherboard to support it along with replacement memory (possibly) is slightly out of my price range at the moment ;)

It's a bit more complicated than that, as there are different cores available that run at different speeds. For instance, the Barton XP2500 runs at a lower clock speed than the Thoroughbred XP2400, it just has more cache memory making it more efficient.

Well considering they go to about 2.25Ghz for the XP2800 Non Barton. And then XP3200 is something like 2.2Ghz or even lower. The XP3200 is also the fastest Athlon you can put in your machine as AMD are going to 64bit CPUs now, so dont know if they will bother with the 32bit range any more.

that means it runs at 2084 mhz according to the box. you can probably wok out roughly what the others will be. suggest just look for a website with the equivalent values listed.

AMD's Athlon Xp range do not run at the conventional MHZ value anymore as they use a thing called Quantispeed which basically rate's the cpu to it's nearest Intel Cpu speed so for instance and athlon XP 2400+ cpu is actually running at 2.06ghz but it's performance is on par and slightly better (depending on tests) than an Intel P4 2400 cpu.
