I far prefer the realistic approach to games though XIII does look pretty amazing.

Cel shading can look great when done right but when a developer messes it up it just looks plain wrong. Same can be said for normal 3d graphics though.
Short memory?
Few people were horified, many blown-away.
XIII is cell shaded becasue it is based on a French comic book.
If anything, the horified reaction to Zelda's cell shading by the general public will have put developers off using cell shading.

yeah, it seemed that once Nintendo announced that Zelda would be using a new graphics engine that was similar to cel-shading, a lot of games decided to follow suit, some doing a pretty good job of it as well. XIII's been in production for a very long time, so i wouldn't be suprised if whoever's making XIII decided to make it cel-shaded after Zelda.
I think far too many developers jumped on the cel-shading bandwagon.
