Help!

A friend asked me to take a look at their computer, as they wanted to get back on the internet, but weren't having any luck. Unfortunately, the computer is one of these tossy Packard Bell Windows 98 thingies from five-odd years ago, and it's hardly been kept nice and tidy on the HDD.

And so I've just popped round this evening and spent the past hour trying to work out what the hell is wrong with it. Now I've easily established it can find a dial tone (a problem I had many years ago, but can't remember what cured it), but having been through every possible solution, I'm none the wiser!

The phone point is fine, the phone lead is fine, I'm convinced the modem is fine (it clicks in preparation to dial a number), I've replaced the card into the PCI slot, I've been through all the settings I can think of, and it's using the latest numbers from Freeserve, but STILL no joy.

Oh, and to make matters worse, it used to be fine for connecting to the internet! >:(

Is anyone out there feeling God-like in my time of desparate need? ;)

Packard Bell Club 40?

Is the internet connecting or does an error message appear?

If it clicks - that means it is dialling - wait a few moments and the internet should connect.

The most likely reason is the fact that the 'dial-tone' option has been turned off so the internet connects discreetly.

Lol, no gamezfreak mate, go to bed! ;)

If there's no dialtone, it ain't gonna dial, and it if won't dial, there's no chance of even contacting an ISP's server, let alone getting connected to one.

And what made you guess a random Packard Bell model?

Cheers for the input though, matey. :)

The machine i'm on now is a PB club 40 (sh!te from like 5 years ago) - when we had dialup I used a PCI modem

I suggest uninstalling the modem then re-installing it through device manager? You'e probably tried all my suggestions.

Maybe the PCI slots have been altered in the Bios?

Maybe the modem has burnt out?

Might seem strange but it happened to a mate of mine. The modem just gave up

If you want to try to force the modem to dial without 'looking' for the dial tone then try adding X3 to you modem initialisation string or uncheck the 'wait for dial tone' box in your modem properties. The modem will dial straight away - obviously it still won't connect if it's completely shot!
