The 2nd Piece.

Link brushed aside a thorny stalk with his arm and stepped out of the dense forest growth, holding his sword out in front of him boldly. He was standing at the foot of the mountain. He looked up into the dark skies and the thick clouds slowly parted, revealing the bright moonlight which crept across the craggy top of Death Mountain, lighting up the damp grass around him. He saw the grass sway to one side as a chilly breeze swept past him. He pulled his cloak tighter around him, lowered the brim of his hat across his brow, and began climbing the mountain.

After a few minutes, he put his sword into his hilt, and fastened his shield to the leather strap running across his back, for he needed his hands to be free to help him climb the side of the mountain, as the moss covered rocks were very slippery. Link climbed swiftly, displaying his strength and agility as he scaled the mountainside with ease. The young prince stopped and wiped his forehead, pausing to drink some sweet-water contained in a pouch on his belt. He thought about the reason of his quest, and doubts sprang to his mind - did he really need to continue? Suddenly, he envisioned the ruler of this kingdom begging him, as he done before, to save his kingdom from the evil clutches of the Emperor Ganon, after summoning him from the Mid-World. Link's mother, Queen of the Mid-World, had consented to Link undertaking this quest, for she knew that the Worlds were in grave danger.

The ruler, King Daphnes Nohansen Hyrule, was an old but powerful man who ruled the two worlds - the Light World and the Dark World - and his reign had been threatened when Ganon had snatched the Tri-Force from the Light Tower. The Tri-Force was the very spirit of both the Light and Dark Worlds, and had been the main governing power of the two worlds, ever since they were created by it. Composed of three 'Light' triangles that gleamed with every opportunity, Ganon had split it into its individual pieces and concealed them in different parts of both worlds. Link had already found the first triangle - in the Light World, and he knew that the other two parts were in the Dark World. The second was at the top of Death Mountain and the thought of this made Link get up and tuck his drink away. His mind was firm once again. He had to save the worlds. Link had an immense hatred for Ganon, for he knew that if Ganon were to take over the two Worlds, he would surely try and capture his home - the Mid-World, too.

Link continued up the mountainside. He glanced up as he heard the clouds rumble loudly. His eyes passed the top of the mountain, and for a brief moment he saw a bright beam of pure white light streak wildly from the darkest part of the top, across the sky. He was temporarily blinded, but felt relief, for he knew that only a part of the Tri-Force could emit such light. Just to check, however, he reached into his buttoned pocket and gently lifted out the 1st part of the Tri-Force that he had searched for and found in the Light World. It didn't blind him, however.
It just glowed pure white against his hand rhythmically, getting brighter and then darker, in a pulsating manner. He found that the closer he got to the top of the mountain, the stronger its glow became. Link paused momentarily, and whirled himself around. He could see over the whole forest, and in the distance, a small line weaving its way between the grassy hills and the darkened rolling pastures. It was the path, which he had followed in order to reach the forest. The forest looked very thin to him now, but it spread itself widely across the base of the mountain.
Link put the Tri-Force triangle back into his pocket and buttoned it tightly, for he was now near to the top. He imagined that the 2nd Tri-Force piece would be inside a cave at the top of the mountain. A thought came to him - Why was it called Death Mountain?
Link felt more and more uneasy as the mountainside became easier to climb - Surely the 2nd piece couldn't be so easy to find?

Link reached the top and found a hole in the dark rock. It was only just larger than him. He peered cautiously into it. He could see very little but could hear drops of water dripping from the ceiling of the cave. Link removed his sword from his hilt and grasped it in his right hand strongly, keeping it lowered. He stepped into the cave, and he found himself tensing up unconsciously. Keep calm. You can do this Link. There is nothing to worry about.
He walked forward slowly. Something touched his nose. He jumped back, giving a startled cry. It echoed loudly inside the cave, but Link was not worried about that.
"Who's there!?" he cried into the darkness. Only his echo replied him. Link thrust his sword forward, firmly, and heard a slow, and fairly loud tearing sound as he moved it round. What could it be? His heart was skipping beats, and he heard it pounding inside his head. It's so loud! he thought. I need light. Even if it's only for a brief moment.

Almost automatically, he reached into his buttoned pocket, and pulled out the Tri-Force piece he had. It shone brightly, lighting up every part of the cave. The cave seemed to stretch on endlessly. In front of him was a large, and very thick spider's web. There you go. No need to worry! he thought, relieved. He brushed aside the rest of, finding it quite difficult. It's so thick! No-one would have come here in ages! Almost as if in reply, Link thought he heard a faint snarl, but it seemed too far away to be certain. He tensed up again gradually. I'd better conceal this piece, for if something is down there, I don't want it to know that I am coming.

Link put the Tri-Force triangle away. Touching the wall of the cave with his right hand, he made his way cautiously down it, stumbling occasionally over larger pieces of rock, that were jutting out from the floor of the cave. It seemed to lead upwards slightly.

Further on in the cave, Link saw a very dim light. Quickening his pace, but with his sword grasped strongly in his right hand, Link followed the source of the light, which gradually became larger as he approached it. It was still dim, but much larger. It appeared to be an opening. Cautiously, Link edged out into the opening. He gasped in awe as his mind took in all that lay before him. He was standing at a considerable height above the outer edge of what seemed to be a very large ring of rock. What surprised him most was the fact that the floor of this ring was paved with a shiny grey metal - similar to silver, and it was reflecting the bright moonlight that was glaring through the clouds. He looked around the edge of the 'ring'. It was lined with many doors on which were carved very intricate patterns. One was most prominent to Link however. It was considerably larger than the others, and appeared to be much thicker, probably made of titanium or steel. What attracted his attention was a larger triangular indent in the centre of this door that had a misty effect around it. The 2nd piece of the Tri-Force must be in there, thought Link. This place is amazing! He glanced up. I must have been the only one to have ever made it here. I have discovered uncharted territory! This appears to be some sort of volcano, rather than a mountain, which has had its vent blocked by this silver paving- similar to a large crater. I have to get to the other side. Should I walk on the silver paving?

Link looked around him. There were no series of ledges running around the ringside at the same level to the one he was standing on. He was on a small ‘peninsula’ of rock that jutted out into the ring - the only place where the ring had an open entrance. He realised that there were three doors evenly spaced out either side of him, and either side of the larger door. On his left side, in between the door nearest to him and the second door, he could see a small opening, but a grating covered it. Through the gaps in the grating he could see nothing. It didn't really matter to him, however, and he began making his way down the small slope in front of him in order to get to the glimmering floor. He slid down, kicking up a lot of dust. Link stepped out onto the silver floor. He looked down, between his boots, and found that he could see a blurred vision of himself. The floor was very slippery, even though Link was wearing boots.

How could this place have been kept so clean? It looks so beautiful.... so good that it shouldn't really belong in a place such as the Dark World. The only explanation that came to his mind was, that it was enchanted. Carefully, Link began stepping over the shiny platform, in the direction of the largest door. As he approached it, he could make out many detailed carvings lining the edges of the door. He looked up, around him. All he could see were craggy tops of the 'crater' running around the top of the mountain. He stood in front of the door. It was much taller than him. He examined the markings, and found writing. It read

Who so ever reaches this door, let him know there is danger.
Who so ever reflects in this door..... (Symbol Font)

"Who so ever reaches this door, let him know there is danger. Who so ever reflects in this door....." translated Link, loudly. He could understand the markings, for they were of the ancient Hylian language, many textures and scripts of which he had read at his mother's palace and found quite interesting. What's that supposed to mean? thought Link. I'll see what the Tri-Force can do, and with that, Link removed the piece of Tri-Force he had, from his pocket. It glittered much more brightly, its pure white glow rivalling that of the moonlight shining down upon the floor. Link looked at it from the corner of his eyes, for he was sure that he would get blinded if he looked directly at it. Yep! The 2nd Piece must be behind this door. He wasn't quite sure what to do next, so he tried to comprehend the other markings around the edge. It was then that he noticed a small portion of the door was changing slowly. He stared hard at it, and realised suddenly that he was seeing a reflection on the metallic sheen of the door. He whirled around, unconsciously replacing the piece in his hand into his pocket. He could sense danger, and he removed his sword from his hilt, and grasped it strongly. As he looked across the silver plain, he could see the small grating slowly opening. He listened to the grinding, as the counter weight slid down, raising the grating. He unhooked his shield from his back, and held it in his left hand, tensing up almost immediately. Nothing happened. The blackness of the hole remained unchanged. No difference in the entrance. What's the matter? thought Link, Nothing has happened. Keep calm. In the few seconds that followed, he found himself relaxing again, his shoulders no longer tight with anxiety.

Link continued to look at the hole for some time, and it appeared to begin changing again. He screwed his eyes up tightly trying to focus upon the darkness surrounding the hole. The moonlight gradually dissipated, and his sight became clearer. He looked into the door for a few seconds, and could make out two red dots, almost at the top of the blackness in the cave. The harder he looked, the more they looked like a pair of eyes. This thought made him jerk around and face the cave. Within seconds of that action, Link managed to see a large, hairy beast dart out of the cave, snarling loudly, and in less time than it took him to blink, he found it flying towards him at incredible speed. Subconsciously he remembered thrusting the shield out in front of him.

The beast hit him square on, throwing back the shield on top of Link's chest, and toppling Link to the ground quite easily. The weight was immense, but Link still couldn't see what it was on top of him, for his shield was covering his chest and face with the beast on top of it. It snarled loudly, almost deafeningly to Link, and he could smell it. It stank intensely of rotting carcasses and its shaggy fur draped itself over his face, suffocating him. A sour, acrid odour of decay drained his throat of ventilation, and he choked suddenly, becoming more agitated. He struggled underneath the creature and his shield, but this had little effect. It shifted its weight a little bit, growling wildly, and it moved its head across the shield, and was directly above Link's face. Amidst his struggle, Link, for a split second glimpsed into the deep, blood red eyes of the creature, and saw its huge, razor sharp teeth dripping with saliva. Some of its hot saliva stung his face. He realised the full horror of the animal, and screamed loudly and constantly. The beast replied with a huge snarl, and made for Link's head. Instinctively, he covered his face with his arm, still holding his sword. The hot breath of the animal whooshed in snorts over his head. It smells so bad- he screamed even more as he felt a searing pain drag slowly across his forearm. Blood poured on his face - and for a moment he was stunned - it's my own blood!! His arm hurt immensely. As a sudden reaction, Link raised his arm, wincing in pain, and brought his sword handle down hard over the animal's skull. He heard a sickening crack. It snarled, and rolled off his chest. He rolled in the opposite direction, and got up quickly. He glanced at his arm momentarily - it was dripping everywhere. The silver sheen was stained with his blood.

The creature rolled over, and slowly stood up, snarling. It resembled a very large bull, much hairier however, with the head similar to a lion. Its shaggy mane was dark grey, but stained in many places - stained with blood. It shook its head hard and prepared to run at Link. Before he saw it moving, he dived hard to his right, going further out into the middle of the silver platform. He felt a surge of hot, putrid air narrowly miss his head, snarling loudly. The beast moves so fast!!
He rolled over again and again, and got up, his tread slipping slightly. He saw the beast hurtle into the rocky wall between two doors. Its head struck the wall, and it fell to the ground stunned. It lay on its back grunting. Link glanced at his arm, and a sudden wave of dizziness swept over him. He was losing blood fast. He had to finish this creature. Decisively, he fastened his shield to his back once more, and stood with his feet fairly wide apart, facing the beast, tensing himself. His arms became taught as he saw the creature stir, then begin to get up. He remembered the strong face of an old sensei who had taught him the art of wielding his sword effectively, and he felt himself clamp both hands on his sword handle. His vision became blurry as he began swinging his sword in a circular-then-elliptical motion around the front of his torso, building up momentum. Then he felt his sword take control. He could make out the beast standing on its feet, waiting to charge. The sword flashed thousands of times around his body, beginning to create an almost impenetrable force-field around him. The creature dashed at him. His sword met the beast in many places at once.

He heard a thunderous crack, and was dazzled by a bright flash of light. The impact was tremendous. Link felt himself flying backwards, and fell to the ground with his shield absorbing most of the blow. He could no longer hear the creature's snarls, and he lay there, tired.

A few minutes later, Link staggered to his feet looking for his sword. He staggered around the area unable to walk straight. Luckily, he stumbled over his sword and sat down with a bump. He lifted it. Cut the cloak up and use it to bandage the wound. He grabbed his cloak and went to work at it. The cloth didn't tear. What? Link's mind was filled with drowsy thoughts. He brought the sword close to his face. The major part of the blade was missing!! It had not snapped, but appeared to have been dissolved by something. A thought struck Link. The blood of the beast must have been acidic, burning my sword up!!
Very little of the blade was left, and a small jagged edge was all that was left of the tip. He hacked at his cloak, somehow tearing a strip of cloth from it. He wrapped the piece around his arm, wincing in pain, and lay down for a few minutes under the moonlight. His mind filled with images, exaggerated in size, as he saw large clouds move swiftly above and out of his view. A strange drowsiness overcame him, and he fell slowly to sleep.

Link awoke with a start. He glanced around him. The same place. The tops of the craggy rocks of the mountain were beginning to show a light pink colour. Dawn was coming. Link stood up, rubbed his eyes, and looked around. A small, shaggy mound was lying at the opposite end of the arena. His sword was ruined. He grasped the handle, and threw it at the dead beast, angrily.
"I wasted my only sword on you!!" he bellowed at it. He heard a throbbing sound coming from his belt. The Tri-Force!! He removed it from his pocket. It glowed brightly in a pulsating manner. He made his way across to the large door, staring at his reflection in the floor. Strange!! I distinctly remember bleeding on the floor over here!! He could see no signs of blood. The floor glimmered again, as the moon came out from behind a cloud. The door had changed. There was no longer any writing present, nor were there any markings. Just a large triangular indent. Slowly, he slotted the Tri-Force piece into the indent. It glowed even brighter, and through the light, he saw the door swing open, but on a hinge running through the middle of it. On the left side of the door lay the 2nd piece of the Tri-Force gleaming as brightly as its other first triplet, on an ancient stone stand, and on the right hand side of the door lay a slender, glimmering sword- its handle embedded in the top of an identical stone pillar. Link exclaimed in awe at its beauty. He removed the 2nd Tri-Force piece from its stand and stepped back. He put it into his pocket. He stepped up to the stone pillar, on which lay the sword. Printed across the headstone was:

Here lies the Master Sword
The keeper of the two Tri-Forces may own it.... (Symbol Font)

"Here lies the Master Sword!" translated Link "The keeper of the two Tri-Forces may own it... Hey! That's me!!!" he cried. Astounded, he put his hand on the handle. It was warm. Slowly, he raised it from its set. The blade glowed brightly. "Yes!!!! I've got a better sword - The Master Sword!!"
He peered around the door at the lifeless creature, and childishly pulled a face at it. I wonder if this new sword fits in my hilt.... He slid it in. The Master Sword was slightly longer, but as he watched, the hilt became slightly longer too, and was restored into a brand new leather one, rather than the old, worn away on he had previously had. Link leapt for joy.

I'd better remove the 1st Tri-Force piece now, he thought, calming down. He pulled at it. It slid out slowly. Abruptly, the large door swung around, and pushed him into a tiny gap between the stone pillar and itself. He was pushed into darkness. He could no longer see the floor. He exclaimed once again. Breathing in strongly, he squeezed his way out from in between the two, and stepped around it in the dark. He fingered the wall. It curved inward, so he followed it around. Suddenly, he felt no grip on the floor, and slipped forwards, and slid down and fell, crying out into the darkness as he did so.

Doh! I should've realised that Italics don't show up! There are places where Link is talking to himself which should be in Italics. Without the Italics, it gets a bit confusing, but I'm sure you won't mind reading it anyway - being the nice people you are :)

Actually, I genuinely did write it.

Back in Year 10, before Ocarina of Time came out, for a piece of GCSE coursework. I didn't know anything about Zelda then (I had never played a Zelda game before), but was following the previews in the Official Nintendo Magazine, and it inspired me to write this story - it really helped my coursework mark go up!

I'm now at Uni and this is my favourite bit of coursework (for obivous reasons) :)

Problem is, I changed the King's name from King Cylus (which I made up back then as I didn't know the original king's name) to King Daphnes Nohansen Hyrule (since I played Wind Waker) - if that makes sense...

I guess you might not find it too interesting then..

I like reading over this story since it reminds me of the time when i knew nothing (excpet who Ganon, Link and Zelda were, what Hyrule was, and what the Triforce was) about The Legend of Zelda, compared to 6 years later when I've played all the Zelda games and have become a hardcore fan of the Series...

I based much of the story on pictures I saw of Death Mountain in the magazines and generally of the game throughout 1998 as we waited for Ocarina's release at the end of the year. Hence the nameless beast at the top, and the silver crater.
