It's can be odd when a character you know from one particular role gets cast in an entirely different role. Take Thomas Jane, for example. He's best known for his role as The Punisher in the film of the same name, so when he cropped up in Stephen King's The Mist, it was kind of weird. I mean, why was he hiding out in some supermarket instead of toting some serious hardware and annihilating every monster that crossed his path? Sarah Michelle Gellar is another case in point. She played Buffy the Vampire Slayer for seven whole seasons, so it was odd to see her fleeing from a long haired spectre in The Grudge. Buffy would have kicked the ghost's dead a**e back to Spooksville, Japan. But all Sarah Michelle Gellar's character really did was screm and run away.

Buffy - sorry, Sarah Michelle Gellar doesn't appear in The Grudge 3. In fact, only one person from the previous films turns up and they're killed off within the first five minutes of the movie. Even the Japanese actress who played the main baddie Kayako doesn't appear in this - instead, her role has been recast, presumably so they could pay someone else less. There are other places where corners have been cut, too. The film takes place almost entirely in a single apartment building. This cost cutting probably has something to do with the fact that The Grudge 3 has been released straight to video. That's not always a bad thing - there are several good low budget horror films out there. But The Grudge 3 isn't one of them.

As you might have guessed, the Japanese director responsible for the first two films is absent, and it shows. The appeal of The Grudge - and to a lesser extent, it's sequel - was that it was a very different type of horror film. There were no gory deaths, most of Kayako's victims just disappearing, and the film was very creepy indeed. The Grudge 3, on the other hand, feels more like Friday the 13th, and not one of the good entries in the series, either. Kayako now just smashes people's heads into windows, takes their eyes out. And the film just isn't scary, either.

If you liked The Grudge, then it's worth checking out both its sequel and the Japanese originals, all of which are readily available online. The Grudge 3, on the other hand, is typical straight to video horror fare. The acting's not bad, but it doesn't offer much in the way of scares, and there's nothing to elevate it above the ranks of the other bland stalk-and-slash offerings to be found gracing the shelves of Blockbuster. And it's certainly not a worthy sequel to the previous Grudge films.

Over the years I've become very jaded after many bad experiences with customer services, you have bucked the trend. Polite and efficient from the Freeola team, well done to all involved.
Wonderful...
... and so easy-to-use even for a technophobe like me. I had my website up in a couple of hours. Thank you.
