I've just booted up my PC and I get a message saying something like "Status: Bad. Backup and replace" for my C: drive. I've had no crashes or loss of data *at all* and this message has just appeared from nowhere (well, on the POST screen to be precise).

I understand what the message means, I'm just wondering how reliable SMART is and if I should worry?

If your drive has SMART it could well still be under warranty as I think SMART is fairly recent.

Contact your manfacturer.

Well, I'd rather be safe than sorry. Back up your HD and then run it 'til it dies. Meanwhile, put off buying your hard drive after back up - mine said the same and lasted a month (possibly more) before it got replaced.
