Won't 256MB give him some future proofing ? YOu can bet stuff like Half Life 2 will need every bit of memory that can be mustered.

"I say its pointless to purchase that card.

You know why? Because it's got 256mb of memory, Games/applications at the moment don't really need such an excessive amount of video RAM, so it will go unused. 128mb is fine, and I suggest going for the 9600PRO or the 9600XT because they peform better then the non-pro version.
