It was his first ever time going to the cinema was to be the experience of a lifetime.
That boy was of course....me, i remember walking into the cinema all big-eyed and looking around with amazment, then walking into the theatre it`self and i couldn`t believe the size of the screen and i said words that everyone at the time remembers, i said "what a big telly!"
I was captivated and was the quietest of my life for around 2 hours.
Some cartoon`s came on first (remember that?, when you were treated to cartoons before the main feature?)and I was familiar with the cartoon - Tom & Jerry hitting the hell out of each other, yes violence at a early age, but it`s Tom & Jerry...classic!
Then the now familar rumble as 20th Century Fox signature tune blasted out, i was shocked but i liked it, then some words came up, i was 3 and could only ready some of them.
So i asked my Dad and he told me what it said.
"A Long time ago in a galaxy, far far away......."
I looked back at the screen and WHAM! the Star Wars music kicked in and the whole cinema audience jumped a bit from their seats and the music blasted out.
Large yellow words scrolled on the screened ...I didn`t care what they said i was in a trance by the music.
Then this big ship started chasing this littler one ahead.........and i was engrossed.
That first time seeing Darth Vader, i sank back into my seat, all i knew was he was a baddy, even before he spoke, just his presence, and the music and that breathing noise......he just had to be a baddy.
Well that`s what got me hooked not just on Star Wars, but the whole movie experience, i have not ever had that feeling of the first time watching a film, and i don`t think i will again, it was `that` experience, the one that forever lost me in the world of movies.
And that film Star Wars (Episode IV) is still as fresh today as when i first saw it, as with all the Star Wars Films they have not aged, they are timeless.
We only need Star Wars to grace us on DVD now to bring back that full cinema experience to the home.
Now i`ve rambled on a bit, tell me your experience`s of the movie`s, tell me what film made `That` Experience the best.
My most memorable cinema experience was being taken to see Superman the Movie. Yes, I did believe a man could fly at that point and Christopher Reeve seemed just the man to do it.
Again, theme music played an important part in the film and special effects were really outstanding back then (although they do seem dated by today's standard, unlike some of the Star Wars effects) It was my first film based on a comic book character, one that I had already been following on a regular basis in the comic books themselves. To see it come to life was an amazing experience and one that will stay with me.
Now where's that region 2 release and hope that it contains plenty of interesting extras.
Again, John Williams did the music, (Michael Kamen now is my favored choice of orchestral arranger, he comes very close to Williams' ability), and I will always remember the whole audience screaming when the head rolled out of the hole in the boat. As Ant would say: Classique!!.
Nowadays though, it tends to be the DVD player instead of the movie theatre, it just leaves me to wonder what will come next after 'home cinema'.
Home IMAX, anyone?
The very last bit of the end of the "first" film, A New Hope, where Luke blows up the Death Star... amazingly superb, but wouldn't be the same if it wasn't for John Williams' soundtrack.
This is also very true of Return Of The Jedi too... the ending is basically over 30 mins long, so it needs a decent piece of music to keep it going... And the action never stops.
I can't wait until a few years... when George Lucas, now a god because of the amazing Episode 2 and 3... much redeemded from "that" film, releases the Star Wars Pack. All films on DVD, and more stuff than I can imagine.
Including a wookiee fridge magnet.
That'll be the day. :0)
