Does anyone remember the old Betamx vs. VHS saga? Basically, they were two different formats of videos, and in the end VHS has become the standard.

I think that the same thing will happen with computer games- one basic standard setup. It has already happened with videos, and even computers (IBM compatable PCs are the norm now). There are alsop so many benefits. For example, companies don't have to think about what format to make games on, instead concentrating on one version that will play on all consoles.

Also, companies like nintendo and sega would be able to sell games to a wider audience- something sega have realised with their new 3rd party venture.

All this would lead to the games market becoming bigger, and this will produce more money for games companies at a lower price. Of course, like DVD players, there will be different types of consoles- eg. those that play VCDs, and those that have surround sound etc. This will give consummers greater choice, and can only be good for the industry.

Indeed, Betamax was far superior- faster play time, better facilities.... Sony njust over estimated sales- not unlik eother ventures of late...

Competition is good for the industry, not convergence. However, what you are suggesting is more one set of standards rather than one platform. If this happens it should not be technology owned by one of the current big players otherwise this may lead to giant price increases in hardware.

Oh, and VHS was the poor cousin to Beta, so it would have been better for Betamax players to win the format war and evolve as VHS players have done. Then there would have been no need for SuperVHS or other, better quality versions of the VHS format.
