Door knockers, that is.

Have you ever noticed, in TV land, particularly Soap land, whenever someone opens a door, there's someone waiting on the other side of it?

I don't make a habit of watching soaps, but my wife happened to be watching Neighbours the other day, and someone had died - that's why she was watching it, the griefmonger - and I noticed this strange trend.

They say, in their odd accents, that they're going out, open the door to leave, and right there behind them is another character. Are we supposed to believe that it was just a coincidence and that they were about to knock? Perhaps if it only happened once, but I've seen it more than once in that same episode, and different houses too!

Since then I've kept an eye on a few such programmes to see if this they all do this, and they do! In fact, the only time that a doorbell will ring is if the character is incredibly busy or stressed inside the house.

I fear for these poor characters waiting outside the doors though. What if it were a particularly harsh winter? What if some poor boy opened the door one morning to find an elderly neighbour dead on the doorstep, having frozen whilst waiting all night for the door to be opened? Perhaps she only wanted to borrow a cup of milk for her nightly cocoa, but as nobody opened the door, she's gone and died.

Imagine if the mormons did that instead of ringing our bells like electricity comes free nowadays.

Patient mormons, imagine that!

And, when they do ring the bell and nobody answers, they never assume the person just isn't there. They look through the letter box and up at the windows and shout a lot and ring the bell again.

Any normal person would ring once or twice then realise the person is not there and go away.

But in soaps, you never call on an empty house. And if the door isn't opened right away the person inside is
a) unconsious on the floor somewhere for various reason (overdose, robbery etc)
b) make the sweet rumpy-punpy with someone they shouldn't have or
c) threatening to kill themselves or preparing to kill someone else.

But that's a great observation, well done!

I've found myself watching Neighbours almost every-evening for months now - yet I don't know why I watch it...

But you're right, EVERY-single-time a door is opened - whether a knock or ring has been heard or not - there is ALWAYS someone stood on the otherside, ready to come in!

And they act so surprised each time it happens - even though it happens to them several times each week!

You'd think they'd know when to 'expect' it by now, would you?!

It's quite like Friends, and how none of them EVER locked their appartment doors! Anyone could walk in at any-time - and they did. But no-one ever seemed bothered about it.
