The day started off fine with me and another guy at college reception waiting for the lecturer to come, he came and took us to the onsite warehouse place where we waited a while for a third student to arrive.
He didn't come so the lecturer decided to hand out a (yawn) health and safety booklet for us to read, after reading most of it and a few breaks later it was show time, the other guy as experience driving the counter-balance forklift so he was fine but I’m completely new to this so after a brief tour of what’s what he gave me the key (gulp) and I got into the forklift and was told to drive it which wasn't so bad once I learnt how much pressure I need to press down on the accelerator and the break is easy to reach so not too bad there.
I was getting used to driving forward and then driving backwards while remembering to look around and using the hand break, after the basics the other lad drove it in a figure 8 formation around the room by staying at a slow pace and turn the wheel around several times so the forklift could turn sharply and carried on the task which I had to do straight after, I was ok but you need room to swing the backend around and I sometimes got to close to some pallets and had to reverse but it was my first day so this properly always happens.
Next out came a barrel which sat in the middle and we had to drive around it with about a 2 inch gap between the barrel and the inside front wheel, the front inside wheel is the pivotal part of the forklift because the rear wheels steer it, by keeping the inside wheel about 2 inches away from the barrel it was possible for the forklift to just drive around and around it which I was ok at but It was a bit tricky sometimes, I had to do this with the other front wheel and then the rear two wheels as well and yes I did tap the barrel a couple of times.
The lecturer put a second barrel out and me and the other lad made figure 8s around them which it's as tricky as you would think because once you pivot the forklift around the back of the first barrel you can line yourself up in a straight line and drive to the opposite side of the other barrel and turn in only when you get to hit, I messed up the angle a few times so I had to do a few sharp turns towards the barrel and a tapped one again but I’m learning.
However the lecturer had to go hospital so we called it a day at 1pm so I didn't get that much practise today, oh well at least I do tomorrow.
> I've driven all sorts- A powerboat (Which I almost flipped over), cars
> and a quadbike... But never a forklift. Sounds fun.
Not so much fun but it's a very useful skill.
Mojojojo may mock it but forklift work can give you a good wage and there are FLT jobs everywhere.
> I hate to ask, but "Went to hospital..." because you hit him
> with your forklift?
lol no, I think he's taking is wife to hospital but I don't know why
