[FILM] Transformers 2 – Revenge of the Fallen

The review i have been waiting to write all year and without question Michael Bay’s remake of our childhood favourite has been one of the most anticipated films of this year. Millions of us were taken back by the first film and enjoyed seeing Optimus Prime and the Autobots in their CGI glory. With high hopes about the sequel could it be pulled off and made into a bigger success than the first?

The first film left us with Megatron being submerged into the ocean and left for dead, but a sneaky Starscream fled at the end and took refuge in space, waiting for the right time to re-launch the Deceptacons attack on Earth and quest to take over the Universe and destroy the Autobots. The second instalment kicks off with us seeing how things have progressed in the past few months. The Autobots now work in secret with the military and take our rogue Deceptacons who have been appearing on Earth. While they are always trying to protect the humans, their size does cause problems and destruction! So the President wants them sent away for good as they believe they are the cause of the recent surge of Deceptacons on Earth. Away from the action, Sam Witwicky is preparing to go to college, leaving the incredibly hot girlfriend, Megan Fox behind he embarks on a new chapter of his life, but before leaving has one last look about his room and find a fragment of the All Spark he helped destroy in the first film. After touching it he begins to see strange symbols and writes them down. Making college life a tad hard as this is not the normal behaviour of a college student.

While all of this is going on the Deceptacons are hard at work trying to bring Megatron back from the depths of the ocean. On their first attempt they succeed and manage to get him away and back to their base in space, where they can begin to make plans for their next attack, they want the knowledge that Sam has taken in as it holds the ability to give them huge sources of cybertron, which is the life force and power source for Transformers. This secret would end up destroying the sun if in the wrong hands and causing all life on Earth to perish.

So the plot is a pretty heavy one and you know that when Autobots and Deceptacons get together there are always some awesome fights, so expect plenty of them this time around. This was one of the criticisms that we heard from the first film from a lot of people, they wanted more fighting and more action. I am pleased to say that you will get plenty more action in this outing and the fight scenes are bigger and visually more impressive than before. In this movie you see a lot more of the different Transformers, but I did often feel they neglected to give any details about 80% of them. In the first film you felt like you knew the Autobots who were protecting Earth, in this film there are a few who you don’t even remember there names necessarily. Which is a shame, but I guess with the film being about 2 and a half hours long, any more detail would have been pushing it a bit far and probably made the film too long for some people. I know that some fans of the film were even getting a bit restless towards the end of this film. Now I personally sat there with my popcorn and enjoyed every minute, so much I think I will be going back this week in fact.

But one person’s positive is another’s negative and if you are not in the mood for a long film with a slightly deep plot, you may not enjoy this as much as you should. I would have to say if like some of my friends you are not a massive cinema fan and get uncomfortable then it may hinder your Transformers 2 experience. I would have to stress the fact that this film is one of the best I have seen in a while and while even the people who were not the biggest fans of Transformers or the cinema still sat there with their mouth open catching flies as you see Opitmus Prime go head to head with Megatron because the only thing that looked better than the fight scenes, was Megan Fox (and in true Michael Bay style, there is a lot of slow motion running!!) But it is not just the great story and the fantastic visuals that I enjoyed and until you watch the film you may think I am talking crazy, but the audio is superb. The noise of the robots Transforming or the gun fire as the military go all out on a Deceptacon. It all just sounds so good you have to hear it at the cinema to appreciate it.

So to put it simple, Michael Bay has done no harm to the Transformer name yet again and has pulled another Blockbuster out of the bag. From the second the film started until the moment it ended I was glued to the screen, and it was one of them films that if you are enjoying like I was then you didn’t want it to end, you wanted another hour of it to carry on. The only other film of recent I have seen like this would be The Dark Knight, you just wanted more because it was that good. Maybe a second time of watching will prove to become a bit tedious as you know what will happen but it would be worth them moments just to see the great fight scenes and all the other amazing twists and turns this film has to offer.

All that is really left is to comment on the acting, and much like in the first, everyone in the film did their part to make it work. I think that Transformers always has a nice touch of comedy in it and sequel does offer some rather comic moments which break up the adrenaline packed fights. Megan Fox is as always a joy to watch and shia labeouf plays Sam as well as ever, with the slight awkwardness he had in the first one gone but now filled with a confidence that someone who has saved the world and pulled Megan Fox deserves. The voice acting on the Transformers is great, with a real powerful feel to them, making them seem even more impressive than they look. For me the film just hit every nail on the head, the only tiny criticism could be it is too long for some people. But any real fan of the films will be on my side and think that it was great as it was and roll on a Transformers 3!!!

A great watch for me and gets a big 10/10

I agree, it's a great film. Wouldn't quite give it a 10 though. Just posted my review of the film so you can see why!

I'll post some proper thoughts later, but first:

Energy source is energon. Cybertron is the, now destroyed, homeworld of the Autobots and Decepticons.

> biggest fans of Transformers or the cinema still sat there with
> their mouth open catching flies as you see Opitmus Prime go head
