Mikhail Bulgakov - The Master and Margarita

Yes, it's Russian and, yes, it's old. But it's good anyway. It's set in Moscow in the thirties and is about what happens when the devil turns up with a bunch of his mates. One of his retinue is a cat who can talk and play chess badly. Chaos ensues. It's all very funny and satirical, but then unexpectedly profound and moving.

One of the best books I've ever read.
