Wow. Just wow. If you've never heard of it, City of God is a Brazilian movie from someone I've never heard, starring loads of kids I've never heard of. Sounds great, huh? Well, I think I may have just seen probably the finest foreign film I've ever seen. It's been called the Brazilian Goodfellas and it's easy to see why - it's a tale of drug running, guns, gang wars and betrayal, acted out over a number of decades by a handful of unknown street kids. Basically, it's a story told from one kid's perspective on how the slum he grows up in goes to hell. It's also one of the most powerful and emotionally gripping movies I've seen for absolute ages.

What also surprised me was how stylish the film was. Perhaps I'm being a little naive but seeing as the movie was made on a shoestring budget in Brazil I kind of expected it to be poorly shot and grainy, but it's super-sharp and brilliantly executed with all sorts of camera tricks you see from the real pros. To be honest, it makes Guy Ritchie's movies look old and tired and it's never a case of style over substance either.

I urge you to seek this movie out, it's a fine example of how a familiar genre (drugs, gang wars etc.) can have fresh life injected into it.

Stylish.
Powerful.
Funny.
Beautiful to look at.

Haven't seen a British film like that in years. City of God is its name, now go rent/buy it.

Weird. I read this last night, today I see a poster in college - they're showing it in the film club. Might pop along on Wednesday.

I've been raving about this film for ages.

But it was shamefully overshadowed by generic crappy films.

Shamefully.

Heh

Yeah I saw this at the cinema and thought it was an excellent film, definetly my favourite film this year.

It reminded me a lot of Boys in the Hood, just a hell of a lot better and no Ice Cube thank god.

Lil Dice is one crazey ass mofo.

More than Predator, not as many as Robocop. But not as many as Commando!

That's sold it to me.
How many killings are there? Is it more than Predator?

Yeah, sorry - when I said this was the best film I saw this year, I forgot about Daredevil and Undercover Brother. Third best, then.

See it, if only for the mental little kid laughing after he shoots up a brothel. Chilling indeed.

I wanted to see this at the cinema but never did. Then a few weeks ago me and my mate decided to rent a DVD and smoke beer etc. I wanted City of God. Guess what we got instead? Undercover Brother! And Daredevil!

Just got paid, though, so I'm going to get this v soon.
